Sounds like you got caught in a rip and taken out very quickly? Trying to swim back in the same way you got taken out is very hard, so you're meant to swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the rip. Once out, swim perpendicular to the shore with the waves back in to safety.
This.. definitely sounds like you got caught in a rip and then fruitlessly tried to swim directly back into it trying to get back to shore . You got to swim across the beach before you try to swim in because rips can be powerful but they only cover a small area
Were you at Piha or one of the beaches west of Auckland by any chance ? I think they're quite notorious for rips
