Hello all. I am a 23 year old from New Jersey. I have just finished my Master's degree, and I am starting a full-time job in mid-June. What this means is that I essentially have 5.5 months to myself.

As most of you probably know, online poker has recently become regulated in New Jersey. Traffic is decent. Games are fantastic. I didn't start playing poker until the summer of 2011, but I imagine that if you were to take a time machine back to 2006, this is what games would have looked like.

I began playing poker during an internship I had in the summer of 2011. I first played in a casino in August 2011. I did not start keeping records or maintaining a bankroll until the beginning of 2012.

I won $3923 in 352.1 hours, for an approximate winrate of 18.57 bb/100 (5.57 bb/hr).

In 2013, I played much less, as I was getting my Master's degree, and my classes demanded far more work than they did in 2012. I played a mixture of $1/$2 and $2/$5 NL.

At $1/$2, I won $276 in 93.02 hrs (~ 2791 hands) for a winrate of $2.97/hr (~ 4.94 bb/100).

At $2/$5, I won $2,894 in 115.45 hrs (~ 3463 hands) for a winrate of $25.07/hr (~ 16.71 bb/100).
Overall, live, I won $3,170 in 208.47 hrs for a winrate of $15.21/hr (~ 11.46 bb/100).

I have also played a little bit online. I played mostly 4NL on Merge for fun. Here are my results from September 25, 2012 until November 19, 2013 (when I stopped playing on Merge).

For 2014, I will start at $50NL with a bankroll of $2,000. I will move up to the next stake when I have 30 buy-ins for the level, and move down when I have less than 20.

January Goals:

The NJ sites do not allow HUDs. I've been struggling to 4-table without one (multi-tabling is NOT my strong suit). I will begin playing 2-4 tables depending on how I am feeling.

Once I get my bigger monitor set up in my house, I should be able to handle it a bit better.

Party Poker NJ / Borgata allows HUDs, and Hold'em Manager works on those sites. Seems like the volume on that network is better as well, so might be a better place to grind cash.

I had more trouble with 4NL online to be honest, although a lot of the reason is that
a) The rake is horribly brutal.
b) It took me forever to stop making "LOL so what if I lose a stack, it's $4" type of plays.
c) It also took me forever to be able to multi-table even a little without tilting my balls off.

Does your casino have any decent regs? Like ones that could win at microstakes online?

Definitely some playing $2/$5. Not so sure about at $1/$2.

Played a bit more. Played this interesting (and probably butchered?) hand.







Note that this raise is effectively to $25.66 (putting villain all-in), so he is getting a super good price to call here.

This villain is pretty horrible / random / spazzy.

My thoughts while playing this hand:
- Standard open pre. Always going to c-bet this board.

- Once he calls flop, I figure he has either a 2, a 5, a flush draw, or 43, or pocket pairs. I don't think he'll ever fold this range on turn so I don't see any point in betting. I was planning to bet some rivers when checked to to get him off A/K high.

- River looks like spaz bluff to me. Or a 2, which is possible, but even this guy doesn't call with too many deuces pre I don't think.

Tanked for a while. Considered calling, but then I thought there was a decided non-zero possibility I'd get shown K-high, so I raised, figuring he could fold it even for that price.


Anyway, I'm not sure at all that this is good. Would appreciate any thoughts.

The more I think about that hand.. the more I think river is terrible. He can have Jx here pretty easily too.

There are a bunch of hands that won't import. This is actually off by about $100 and probably at least 100 hands.

I'm running a fair bit above EV here, which I suppose is good, but it always seems to make me feel worse (i.e. I feel like my results are because of luck).

Obviously, these sample sizes are a bit tiny, but a couple things jump out at me.

1) Losing in EP, think VP$IP is just too high from UTG. Going to try to tighten that up to ~10% or less. I think 15% may be okay in some games, but in my games I am just getting flatted by 1 or villains in position waaaay too often to turn a profit with some of the weaker stuff.

Going to probably cut stuff like 22-55, AT, KJ, maybe even KQo from my EP range.

2) The button.

The winrate there is definitely lower than it should be. I'm losing money in showdown pots on the button but again, lol sample size, etc. so we'll see what happens with that.
