Start with x dollars, for example, $200. With $200 you have 100 buy-ins for .01/.02 NL games. On the low end, say you are playing 4 tables at at time for 60 hands an hour per table, or 240 hands per hour combined. If your win rate is something like 5bb/100 you are earning 12 bb/hour or .24 per hour. Play for 4 hour per day, 5 days a week. 960 hands per day, 4800 hands per week. Obviously the more tables you play the better off you will be if you can handle and play the same game with the same win rate.
This will net you $4.80 on average per week. At this rate, it would take you approximately a year to double your money.
On the other hand, if you play 20 tables at a time instead of 4, that would be 1200 hands per hour, 4800 hands per day, for 24,000 hands per week.
This will net you $24.00 per week. You move up in stakes to .02/.05 after 12 weeks with a bankroll of now $488.
Maintain the same 5bb/100 at .02/.05 and play the same number of hands daily/weekly. You are now netting $60 per week. At the conclusion of 10 weeks, now 22 weeks into your grind, you have roughly $1,000 in your account and can more than comfortable move up to $.05/.10.
Rinse and repeat at .05/.10 and say your win rate drops down to 4bb/100. Play the same number of tables and hands etc, and you are now earning $96 per week and at the conclusion of 15 weeks, can move up to the .10/.25 level with 100 buy ins and a net profit so far of roughly $2,300.
You are 37 weeks in with a net profit of $2,300. Maintain a win rate of 3bb/100 hands at .10/.25 and you are now earning $180 per week, and in 15 weeks (52 weeks total) you will have earned an additional $2,700 for a BR of $5,500 net win of $5,300.
If you are playing cash, and want to have a very conservative risk of ruin by using a 100 buy-in rule, you have earned $5,300 in 52 weeks time.
You could obviously be a bit more aggressive and play a 50 buy-in rule which would look something like this. Although I would advise against it as your risk of ruin is increased dramatically.
40 buy-ins at .02/.05 with $200 BR.
24,000 hands per week @ 5bb/100 = $60 per week. Play 6 weeks for a $360 gain, $560 BR.
56 buy-ins at .05/.10 with $560 BR.
24,000 hands per week @ 4bb/100 = $96 per week. Play 8 weeks for a $768 gain, $1,328 BR.
53 buy-ins at .10/.25 with $1,328 BR.
24,000 hands per week @ 3bb/100 = $180 per week. Play 8 weeks for a $1,440 gain, $2,768 BR.
55 buy-ins at .25/.50 with $2,768 BR.
24,000 hands per week @ 3bb/100 = $360 per week. Play 12 weeks for a $4,320 gain, $7,088 BR.
70 buy-ins at .50/$1.00 with $7,088 BR.
24,000 hands per week @ 3bb/100 = $720 per week. Play 12 weeks for a $8,640 gain, $15,728 BR.
Total gain = $15,528 in 46 weeks.
Obviously, the key is to maintain your win rate. I personally would not be comfortable playing 20 tables at a time with only a 50 buy-in bankroll. I would much prefer a 200 buy-in bankroll as I think even 100 buy-ins is nowhere near conservative enough when playing that many tables.
If you are a winning player, this will work for you, if you are not, then I'd play 100k hands or so at the .01/.02 level and probably pay a coach for some help. Use a HuD, analyze your game, browse the forums, find better strategies, post your trouble hands, and see what can be done differently.
I'd also recommend at least an hour of study for every 4 hours played, and given the large number of hands you'll be playing, perhaps 1 hour of extracurricular study, and an hour of your own hand study.
Obviously, this is just a cash game grinding example, but small MTT SNGs seem to be a good way to go for many individuals as well.

P.S. Obviously, make sure you get signed up with a rakeback account as with this type of grinding, it could dramaticaly increase your profits.
