The playing field is way different today then it was when I started playing poker 8 yrs ago. I remember people calling down and leading with middle pair and was confused when they didnt drag the pot. Ahhh the good ole days Well, I am a firm believer that if you are a break even player or better that there are millions to be made past the 8% plus EV of being a better than avg player, extra gained value of a big payout tourney by counquering the field of similar minded grinders.

This year I have created a new program geared towards a strict cash diet with a growth mechanism that I call positive progression. Gives shots at larger scores while not bending the bankroll so much that it snaps.

Key 1: Be honest with your tilt factor and ability to stay strict to the guidelines. Being to proud and staying above your level will break you (will make sense in a sec)

Key 2: Cash Diet- committ not only to limit spendings but also track where your spendings are going

Key 3: The pits will crush you----you pit, mine as well quit

Here is the positive progression to maximize your gain and minimize exposure.
Lets look at a bankroll for a 1/2NL grinder. Lets say you are trying to build a standard 20X the buy in roll which would be a 4K roll. I encourage you to take a growth strategy that if you are winning player your roll might end up supporting 25/50 quicker than you would think. Start by structuring your first shot at 10X your target by pressing your limit. Here are the rules

(adjust to your bankroll and game size- this is an example for 1/2 build to 2/5)

Rule 1: When you reach 10X the buy in (2k) committ to taking your first shot at 2/5NL when you can build to a full buy in. Anotherwards, when you get to 2.5K take 500 and play one buy in at 2/5.

Rule 2: If you lose you have to go back down to 1/2 until you can rebuild your roll to recoup double of what the shot buy in was. For example: Lets say you get to 2.5K and take 500 to 2/5 and lose. You now have 2K left. Then you committ to playing 1/2 until you can recoup double that buy in which would be 500 X 2. When you rebuild now to 3K you can take another 2/5 shot for 500. If you miss then you have to rebuild till your roll is at 3.5K. Then take another shot... If you miss again then the next shot is at 4k....So on and so forth. This builds in shots while you are still building your roll even when you miss.

Rule 3: If you lose you have to go back down no questions asked. This seems simple but so many go broke because of ego and refusing to go back to a smaller game once they get the taste of the bigger. This comes into play especially once you have a few consistant wins at in this scenerio 2/5. Its easy to say well I won 4 sessions totaling a 6K climb so after losing one buy in of 500 I can afford to stay at 2/5. The key difference is that the additional buy in is comming direct from your roll rather than taking profits from 1/2 and pressing with them. Smart Biz men use other peoples money to make theirs. Poker should be no different.

Rule 4: Keep buyin in at the shot level until you have a losing session. If you end up winning enough consecutive sessions that total 4X the next levels buy in then take one full buy in at that level. For example: Lets say you build to 2.5K and take 500 to 2/5. You crush for 4 winning consequtive sessions totalling 6k profit. A full 5/10 buy in is typically 1,500 in the Mid west. Take 1,500 and sit one buy in at 5/10. If you lose then go back down to 2/5 for a 500 buy in. If you lose that buy in then you essentially you are up the 6k minus the 2k in 5/10 and 2/5 shots. This leaves your new roll at the 2.5K plus the 4k earned totalling 6k. Go back down and add another 2/5 session and repeat.

I have floors ask me all the time why and how I go from 2/5 one day to playing 5/10 or 10/20 the next. What they are failling to see is that in essence I am never using my money because I am always using others.

With the rooms getting harder and harder I feel that the only way to make huge strides is to have an amazing poker biz plan and stick to it hell or high water.
