97 DAYS and ONE CHALLENGE (Story of STEROIDhulk)

Hi, My name is Marko. I wanted to create this challenge to get myself back to work. I have been on holiday for about two months, because of various reasons, a trip to USA watch ice-hockey and then moving to Malta. Even though I haven’t played much, so It’s given me time to think about things, my life, poker, etc. I feel like my poker life is coming to an end in quite many levels, but I feel like I need to give back to the community, which has given me so much through the years. Poker has given me a great opportunity in life, and It’s been a great ride, so I wanted to create a blog to discuss poker and life in general. I want to help other people to achieve their dream in poker and becoming a poker professional. I have been professional MTT-player for the last 6-7 years, and this is my story how I got started and how I have improved through the years. Read this to learn more about being professional or If you are just starting, learn what it takes and how to improve your game. I’m not going to talk about strategy too much because I think discussing things in writing is going to take me too much time off from playing. I’m going to leave that to million training sites/coaches, BUT I will share a lot of general knowledge you will need when you’re becoming professional or maybe while you’re becoming better one.

I will use this blog to motivate myself to push through this challenging challenge. It will be the toughest challenge I’ve done, and I hope I will learn something new from it as usual. Nothing better than going out on top! Keeping it all together for a long period is the hardest thing, because of:

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
- Will Durant

97 DAYS and ONE CHALLENGE:

A total of 14 weeks intense poker, 98 days. Why 97 day and one? The one day is a surprise. I will do it on the 98th day, and we’ll see what happens. My goal is to play 50 hours a week. It’s a lot of working hours, especially when I’m still doing blog, vlogs and I have some coaching duties while doing the challenge so that it will be extremely intense. I will only count playing hours, though, so in reality, It’s going to be a lot of poker per every day, maybe 9-10 hours? I’m looking forward to it, though, nothing better than a proper challenge!

I thought about putting some minimum hand requirements per day, so I can’t slack and play few tables at the time. I want this to be productive and make a good hourly rate, so I think minimum hands per day should be 4300 hands. I will probably average out more, but I want to have some minimum. It’s always good to have some daily goal. I don’t want to put myself too much pressure of playing too many tables, though, because I want to vary my play between 6 to 18 tables max. Mostly playing around 8-12 tables at the same time, depending on stakes I’m playing and how deep I’m in tournaments.

My plan is to do the challenge in 5 days a week so that I will have one day for blogging/vlogging/coaching and then one day rest. Five days of intense playing every week.

In case I can’t do my 50 hours in 5 days, I will play on 6 and so on. If I need extra days I will use them, but like I said I want to do poker in 5 days, so that’s going to be my goal.

THE CHALLENGE IS:

14 weeks of professionality.
Play 50 hours a week, 700 hours total in 98 days.
Average of 4300 played hands per day, so a total of 301k hands played.

My goals:

Give 10% of my winnings to charity, after rakeback and tickets.
Become better professional through the challenge, improve.
Give people enough knowledge to start their poker journey.
Beat the challenge!

My rewards:

A trip to New Zealand.

I love to travel and I really hope I will make this New Zealand trip. My friend is moving there(for a one year) in April and I would really like to see him while he is living there.

(Pic from South Africa. Gorgeous place, highly recommend to visit.)

My screen name on Pokerstars is STEROIDhulk so you can follow my daily games there, and I will post my other screen names later.

I will later post a link to my blog, so you can read more about improving your game and life. I will post here vlogs and some other stuff, but more accurate things will be on my blog.

I will post here 5-6 times a week vlog(about how my day went etc.), then some daily motivational stuff and basic results. I'm hoping to make a new blog post to my site 5-6 days a week, depending on how my head works and how much stuff I can write down.

I will start the challenge on first of March, 2017.

Cya at the tables and keep crushing!

I will start first by writing a story how I started my journey in the poker world and then we can continue to other things.

Part 1 out of 2

I don’t remember exact dates when I started because it was so long time ago, but I guess it would be around ten years ago I saw my brother playing poker online and I was instantly hooked. I thought it was the greatest thing ever you could play a game and make some money? Sounds good to me I watched all the poker series I could find online. High stakes poker was a huge favorite of mine, and I was dreaming of playing in those games as well. At first, I was cash game player, and I enjoyed the challenge cash games gave me. It took me probably couple years to make any profit from the game, though. Of course, you would win sometimes, but after couple years I started making money through rakeback while playing 6-16 tables. My first investment I made through poker was buying TV for 1,6k€, which was a lot of money for me back in the day and I remember being very proud of it. Not that I recommend anyone to spend all their money on TV, maybe not the best investment idea!

Today I couldn’t even focus on cash game because I find them very boring because tournaments are my passion when it comes to poker. I was always a huge degen before I became a poker player. As a kid, we always played slots, because they are available everywhere in Finland, stores, gas stations wherever, but hey at least some small % went to charity, so I guess I have always given money to charity through something. I guess that’s important, but we always wanted to get rich playing slots, and sometimes we did hit that good run and won a lot of money() and felt like the top of the world. As a kid, we didn’t have any money, couple €s now and then and playing slot machines felt like a good investment because you could hit it big(win 20€-50€). There was, of course, no logic to it and at the end, I just became gambling degen losing my paychecks to blackjack/roulette/slots and sports betting. It’s funny, though, that after I had become a professional poker player, I didn’t have same urge for other gambling games. I guess it made me realize I’m not EV+ in these games, so why bother? I guess the love of gambling also made me fall in love with tournaments because you can have similar good runs like in casino games or you will lose a long time. It excites me and cash games have felt super boring to me last 6-7 years. Back in the day, I used to love watching Patrik Antonius and others playing super high stakes. It was the best thing ever. Today I wouldn’t even bother watching cash games. It just makes me bored, and that’s why I play tournaments. The beats you can get in tournaments are way worse than in cash games. You can make it deep and lose 80/20 situation and lose a lot of money in equity. It’s just way more interesting than playing for that same $100-$500 bucks every time. Call me adrenaline junkie in that sense. Gamble it up!

Hello!

All right so here's my blog address http://www.pokeronsteroids.com/. I will be adding there my blog posts about poker(5-6 days a week) and here I will send a link to vlogs and basic results etc. If you have any questions just post here, I think it will be easier for all of us. Thanks!

The Beginning Part 2 out of 2

How I found tournaments? I’m not exactly sure, but before tournaments, I was playing HU and I was just bum hunting. I was playing pretty low stakes, 10-25€ buy-in game and making some money. I was a big winner in my games, and then William Hill decided to ban me from my games(limited my cash games to 2€ buy-in..) because I was winning too much, so I guess It was destiny in that sense. I don’t remember why I changed from HU to tournaments, but I guess It was because I couldn’t play cash games on William Hill anymore and I liked Ipoker, so I didn’t want to which the site, so I ended up playing tournaments. I made a good profit from tournaments immediately and noticed I was good in them and made a steady profit from month to month. It felt nice to have one niche where you were good. I started out winning $1-$2k a month, and it felt the best thing ever. I just kept going, and soon I noticed my job was interfering with my poker games because I had to stay awake till 4-5 am and around those times I was supposed to go to work, so I decided to quit my job. I had an argument with my boss about some salary issue, so that was the last thing for me, I decided to quit my job. I didn’t care for my salary at the end because I was making more or the same money from poker as from my job, so after the small argument, it was easy to call it quits.

It’s been a long journey, and I can’t believe I’m at a point I’m thinking about retiring, but I think everything has its time and at some point, it’s time to move on. Poker has given me a lot, but I think to take next step I have to move on to bigger and better(?) things. Poker doesn’t fit my life the same way it used to. I always focused 100% on poker, but I don’t’ have that same passion anymore I used to have. Now I want to challenge myself more, in the business world. I want New challenges and new obstacles to beat. Before I quit poker, I thought I had to leave and give out my information what I have about this game and what I have learned about life from it. I hope these tips can help people who are just coming into a game or even older players who haven’t figured these things out yet, but I want to go out and give away my knowledge. I want to give back to this community because It gave me a good life, so I hope I can provide someone else with a good start. Hurrah!
