Hey man
nice thread! Took me a couple of days to read this all, it's a shame how past wee while had gone for you but you can turn it around!
I play pretty much the same stakes mtts as you just now and would like to point out a few things that I have noticed/ some of my own ideas.
You seemed to be doing really well on your own, not sure why you decided to get backed? The downswing has coincided with you joining the stable. Cos surely it's better to play lower stakes, weaker fields with all of yourself as opposed to higher stakes with a small % where you 1- might not feel too comfortable playing and 2- where the players are better.
Of course you can beat $55's or whatever but you've only been playing mtts for a couple months.
You should try out some new things in your session, when I play mtt's for a couple months straight sometimes I feel my game stagnates a bit and gets worse (level of play isn't great +less post flop play + almost auto piloting.)
Playing some cash for just a couple ideas can boost your confidence exponentially as you really get to get creative post flop, and can then take that over to mtts.
Generic mtt leaks. I've picked up on quite a few this year, I used to always say to myself aw this guys so bad he does min raises AA with 10 bbs otb and ships all of his range, all the while as I 3 bet shoved KQs lol. TAKE NOTES on stuff like this. Then next time you can exploitably fold. Mtt regs have lots of huge population tendency leaks, have you thought about these and what we concepts you can use to exploit them?
You said you have a RIO membership, I would suggest going right back to the start of Ben Sulsky's videos and watching every single one. Even though 90% are not mtt videos it made me think about the game in a whole new way. Vastly improved my HU from just watching him play, made me think more logically about poker decisions and not get nearly as emotional, gave me new ideas to try out during a session.
I mean, how many mtt players incorporate any kind of over bet strategy in to their game? Or a balanced turn leading range?
Prob hardly any.
Mtt regs in general mostly play the same, so play DIFFERENT!
As for your mind set you are stuck in what I call a losing mindset. I'm obviously not saying you're bad or anything, but it's your mindset that is.
Last year I decided to start reading again, I'm 22 and hasn't read a book in full for over 10 years. I bought the Dalai Lamas book called 'the art of happiness.' It made me approach life and poker from a totally new perspective. He is one of the most clever people in the world when it comes to the mind, happiness and training your mind to be able to achieve anything.
I read other books too on mentality and other stuff.
I took these steps cos I was doing what you were doing, I was JUST grinding and grinding. Making no changes to my good bar maybe watch a random mtt video that gave me no new ideas except that I needed to run better.
Sometimes after a week or whatever of losing I get a 'dirty mind' (not sexual lol) but I mean this that I go in to a session still thinking about last weeks losses, how much money I had in my account at its peak, how I CANT win. A year or two ago (been playing pro for just over 3 years) I went 10 months of losing after having 12 winning months in a row. Had i suddenly become terrible? Nope. But I has mentality leaks/ poker leaks/ life leaks and that cost me maybe $20k. (It's okay I bunked $20k back in a scoop lol.)
I was close to quitting, poker got me so angry and I couldn't win no matter what I did.
So I played one table of $2.50/5 zoom with 5.5k in my role (peak was 49k, although I did withdraw a lot) I still feel to this day if I'd lost that session I would have gone busto. I won like $750 (1.5 buy ins.)
Couple days later I used point I had to buy in to the Sunday Kickoff, I took 5th or so for $5k ish. Then I final tabled Big 22 for another 3k, was now up to like 15k from 5k and on verge of busto.
Then I take 4th in a $109 scoop for $20k. The next night I come 11th and pretty much final table bubble another scoop, $27 hugeeee field, for $1.1k when first was again $50k.
I made almost $30k that month, last May I think it was. After almost a year of losing every month.
Not bragging or anything, but just want to stress the importance of a CLEAN mind. Is have rather have a year of 2k winning months than 10 months of losing then win 30k.
So if you're still thinking of losses TAKE A FEW DAYS, OR A WEEK OFF. When you come back, it shouldn't feel like, aw I'm down $2k from my peak or whatever, it should be, okay if I win $1 today it will be good cos I'll be above where I started.
You have to reset your mind meter lol.
Anyway I'm rambling, I've just been thinking about mentality a lot and stuff around it, hope you get 1 or 2 things of benefit from what I said here. I don't usually go on this tbh I just liked your thread. Pm me if you wanna chat or anything.
GL BRO! And congrats on getting a gf already lol :P
