Sexy Straddle goes South...

First Hand Post so bare with me....
Live in Dallas, so this was at the "local" casino about an hour up the hwy. I had been playing for about 3 hours and have a pretty good feeling for all but one player who has just sat down. He has seen three hands and played them all. This is a 1/2 game and I straddle UTG for $4. I have been doing this most of the night.

Here is the hand:
Everybody folds except the Villain who has played evey hand since he sat down. Villain - ($160) raises $14 on the button.
Both small/big blind fold.
Hero (UTG - $320) i look down and see KK off. i raise to $34

Flop ($48) Jd,4c,2h
Villain- checks
Hero - bets $25
Villain - calls

Turn ($73) 8c

Villain - checks
Hero - bets $55
Villain - check raises All In

I tank and eventually lay it down.........

Is this the correct laydown since I have no history to go off of with this Villain? I put him on a set, but I have been thinking about/replaying this hand since Sat. night.

Bet more on each street including preflop.

Snap call as played.

Re: Sexy Straddle goes South...

I think you need to be pretty darned confident in your read here. Villain had $160 pre, so by my math he's got only $46 ($160-$34-$25-$55) behind and there's already $228 in the pot -- you only need to be ahead ~17% of the time to win the hand. I think the turn is a clear call; if he has a set, bad luck.

I would bet more on the flop -- if you made it $34 pre, then shouldn't there be $68 in the pot (instead of $48)? If so, make it $45-$50 on the flop.

Re: Sexy Straddle goes South...

First of all OTF it should be $71 in the pot... Well unless of course you made some kind of deal with him that he didn't need to call the extra $20.

OTT - $121

Here you bet $55 and it is $46 more to call. If my mathz skillz are correct you would be getting 5-1... but besides all that... Your calling $46 to win $231... Ez snap call.

Re: Sexy Straddle goes South...

I think the hand was played just fine until you called.
160 - 34 - 25 - 55 = 46$
He put 46$ into the pot over top of your bet on the turn.

There is ~290$ in the pot, and so we only need to be good 15% of the time here to make a call profitable.

If we give him vredit for all made sets, thge only 2 pair that makes any sense, and pocket pair higher than J's, and two different nut flush draws, which seems to be a good range, we're still almost 50% here, and I think that's being generous.

Re: Sexy Straddle goes South...

OUCH..... it seemed like he had much more money at the time, but I am pretty sure he started the hand with around $160 so I am not a happy camper.

Re: Sexy Straddle goes South...

Hero starts the hand with kk off? Hand makes no sense, he's on the button but he check calls. Then the pot size is not even close on any street.

Re: Sexy Straddle goes South...

pot sizes arent right.. you raise to 34 and he calls = 68 + 1 + 2 +4 = 75

you need to bet this flop at least 1/2psb, but i would go more toward 2/3 with 50

turn pot = 175 (assuming you take this line)

turn i lead for the rest of his stack, v is calling with Jx

also, how is V starting the action every street if he's otb?

this hh makes no sense

Re: Sexy Straddle goes South...

Should go to the "Best of LLSNL" and read that.

A good place to start for learning how to post good threads would be

LLSNL>Random>4. Live Hand Template

Now onto the hand,

Pre-flop you could raise more, 34 is fine though

Flop:bet larger with the intention of getting it in OTT

OTT:as played we call.

From my calculations you messed up your pot size. You should not post the pot size in my opinion, it does not help anyone who is studying (refer to suggestion below)

Best of LLSNL>Random>6. Studying Poker

About all I want to add for now, good luck.

Re: Sexy Straddle goes South...

think your math is off, pardner. If you raise to $34 pf, SB/BB fold and he calls then main pot should be ~ $71 going to the flop. As played, I am never folding. I think instead of a set, villain saw calling your turn bet as being passed the committment threshold and just decided to shove with what bit of FE he had left since he probably thinks he could be facing a river shove from you if he just flats ott. He could easily do this with any J, and combo draw ott. We shouldnt just be putting villains on sets just because he shoves. This is a call all day and if he played AA like this, then good for him and take a mental note that villain is "trappy".
