POKER HAND advice HELP

Here's the hand I had to play last night and I need some advice on how could I have played this differently. I'm playing 2-5 no limit cash game. Started with 500$ and got my stack at 2200 until I got this hand. New guy joined the table, haven't played with him before, at this point we have about 10 hands left for the night until casino closes.

I'm dealt 9 and 9 UTG+1 and raise to 25$. The guy reraises to 85$ on the dealer button. I call the raise and it's just me and him in the hand.

Flop comes down 10 84. I check and he bets 100$ and I flat call. the turn brings a 6. I check again and he bets out 300$ right away, I THINK FOR A MINUTE AND MUCK MY HAND, the guy shows aceking

I was sure he had a over pair but like I said, haven't played with him before so wasn't sure if he was making a move or not. What did I do wrong and how can I fix this in case i'm in another situation like this in the future. Thanks.

Re: POKER HAND advice HELP

Moved from Poker Theory.

It's not relevant that you built your stack up to 2200, or that the casino is about to close. That you have not played with him before is important info though.

I am not a great NLHE player but I question whether flat-calling his raise OOP is a good idea. Seems like a spot to fold, probably, but against a well known opponent it might be a good place to re-raise. If he has $500 stack, it's too shallow to set-mine.

Having called pre, I call the flop, I think. Raising also seems like an option.

The turn doesn't change much but after he bets again his range should be narrower. I honestly have no idea what I'd do in this situation - I try to stay out of spots like this.

Re: POKER HAND advice HELP

First, 99 is a little weak for raising from such an early position. I'm limping with this hand, if i'm going to play it at all from this position. The way this hand played out showed exactly why it's so difficult to play the small/medium pairs up front. We get 3 bet, the flop doesn't have a nine, and it has an overcard. You check which makes betting for your opponent almost mandatory at this point, no matter what he's holding. Since he's probably betting 100% of the time in this spot we have to at least call, but betting into him is better. If you lead 100 on this flop there's a good chance he folds AK. Showing some strength might head off the big turn bet you ended up facing too. You didn't play this hand poorly, just passively. Some good did come out of it however. Assuming you plan to play in this game again you've learned at least two very valuable pieces of information: 1) AKo is in his 3 betting range and 2) He is capable of making big bets on the turn without much of a hand. If you end up in a spot like this against him in the future you have to give serious consideration to calling him down.

Re: POKER HAND advice HELP

Sorry, forgot to mention that he started the hand with about 750$. Usually I like to limp in EP with small to medium pairs but I raised this time just to mix it up and build a pot.

Believe me that the next time he his at my table that move will not work twice, he might have the NUTS next time he plays with me and thats for me to figure out, but now I know he 3 bets ace king pre flop and will fire at least 2 barrels if its a low board so I might have a couple tricks up my sleeve for the future.

I'm not a pro and I do make mistakes and calling out of turn with 99 might be a bad move but I knew if I hit that 9 or a good flop and he shows one inch of weakness that I will fire but he went crazy on that hand and did not give me a chance to read him or bet and I did not know his hand range when he 3 bets pre flop, First time I see him at my table. I could raise either the flop or turn to see where i'm at but at that point I should just say all in because that guy did not look like he was folding and 750$ was a lot so I muck and went to war in another hand right after. Picked up jacks when somebody made it 25$ from UTG with 3 callers and I make it 105$ and the original raiser goes all in for 175$ and the rest fold and I flopped a Jack and the rest is history, didn't feel to bad about my 99 no more haha even tho Loosing that hand thinking I made a mistake and cost me a big pot still sucks and that's why I posted the hand on here. Thanks guys. Keep the info coming, I appreciate it very much.

When someone is 3betting you, you can't put them on a range and you're oop, it is time to fold.

I think you have to fold pre here. Best case your a flip out of position so you're basically set mining heads up and out of position which isn't ideal. I also wouldn't raise 99 in this position

Re: POKER HAND advice HELP

Fold/limp pre.

Once he three bets, you should fold.

On the flop, you should fold since you have 2 outs and no clue what he has.

On the turn, you should fold since you have 2 outs and still no clue what he has.

You got in a pot OOP against a guy who took a line like he had a big pre flop hand. How are we supposed to soul read this new player and know he had AK?

The problem wasn't that you folded the better hand, it's that you folded it about 200 dollars to late.
