The guy is standing in front of the bench to be sentenced (this is traditional in Virginia"
He says, " you mother ****er," spins to his left and comes after me (he is not restrained because he'd been free on bail).
He takes a big sort of roundhouse swing at me, but because he is much taller than me (maybe 6'4" to my 5'11"), and because he reared it back over his head, it has a downward arc. This triggers my "disarm an inexperienced knife wielder" army hand to hand training, which is a block with crossed arms, grab the wrist, spin, snap the arm over your shoulder move. You finish it off by using the broken elbow to force the guy to the ground, and in the textbook move, you pick up his knife and cut his throat.
It takes a second or two. By the time I have him down, the judge is on his feet, and the bailiff is getting there.
The guy is on the floor screaming. The bailiff reaches down to secure the guy and the judge yells, "stop."
He comes down off the bench and kneels down next to the guy. He says something like "oh, that looks like it hurts. I think you've learned a lesson today, but I think I will reinforce it. I am revoking your 8 year sentence and I am resentencing you to 20 years. bailiff, take him into custody."
Obviously, the place was in an uproar, but that's pretty much the gist of it.

But when you start from the bottom and your the only income in your household its really hard. That's why I gave myself 5 years. So right now I'm still with my plan.
Poker is a process when you have money limitations. Its hard to save and live off of lowstakes. By next year I should be playing 5/10 hopefully.

Thanks.
Does it generally work better to have a full time or part time job while grinding? I'd hate to have to support a family at 1/2, especially in Cal.
Good luck to you.

1/2 is unbeatable in cali. Plenty of 2/5 and 3/5 games you can beat with 60bb caps.
I would recommend a fulltime job(no weekends) or a part time job to grind. Without 8 months of emergency income and no job its very hard to take care of a family of 4. My bankroll is my liferoll. That why I always have to take out of it to pay bills, eat and necessities.
Birthdays and christmas are the hardest parts of the year for me.
It sucks because me and my daughter birthdays are right by each other Nov, 19 and the 5th then christmas. Then my girl and my sons birthday come back to back April 14 and may 8th.

two things here
a) your hand to hand training was much better than mine. I am jealous
b) what the judge did is bull****(in my non lawyer eyes)
how does the guy attacking you have any bearing on a crime he previously commited AND a sentence that was already given?
judge should be in jail imo

Re: ***Official "It Lives, It Lives" Chat Thread***
I think dhcg's point is that it should be a separate assault charge, rather than a sentence enhancement. Judges have a lot of leeway on sentencing for many/most charges, though, and it saves a lot of money and time to just enhance the original sentence/

There is actually a somewhat amusing story behind my hand to hand training.
My job in the army was intelligence analysis. For the most part, it is a desk job, and we were considered rear echelon chair warmers. The army doesn't really waste time on giving us hand to hand training.
When I was a young private, I was assigned to an intelligence company. Our company commander was a female. She was super hot.
At the time I was in her company, she was dating the commanding general's junior aide. He was a ranger, and was one of the instructors at the ranger school before becoming the general's aide. My company commander decided it would be interesting for her mob of chair warmers to substitute ranger hand to hand training for most of our usual morning physical training. So for a period of about three months, instead of doing the usual jumping jacks, sit ups and such, we'd hit the sand pit and do hand to hand under his instruction.
So, yeah, if my CO had not been a hottie dating the number one stud duck on post, the dude in court probably stumps my ass.
As for the judge, the sentence was legal--it was the maximum the law allowed, and all judges in Virginia have a 21 day window in which they cal change their mind on any decision they make, whether sentencing or anything else. So he was well within his rights.
Also, 2 of the factors a good judge considers in sentencing are the defendant's remorsefulness, and the likelihood the defendant will offend again. I'd say the judge had new information on both issues, wouldn't you?
