You will miss 100 % of shots you don't take!!!
You'll eventually lose if you take that route, just like shoving every hand. You'll double up or go home. There's no positive unless you call it quits for the session at some point.

Its meant to be spread out through the week, not one single night or 48 hr session figured that was implied...

Win at 1-2 go home, play 2-5 the next time if you run good go home, play 5-10 with the profits the next time you play...

Everyone talks about getting up from a game when between 10% and 20% of your bank roll is on the table.

So, my bankroll is right about $3,000 at the moment.
Earloer this week I sat down at a 1/2 game with $250 and tripled up first hand. Would people recommend that I get up right then and there?

The first thing to consider is, how big is the next biggest stack? If you're not covered, you're not really "sitting with 750". If the next biggest stack is 200, you're effectively sitting with 200 until someone gets more than that.

Secondly, you can also "get up" by simply nitting it up until you actually leave.

What did you do?

Thanks 11t, hutch, atsai, et.al for the advice. I'm probably going to wait and take a shot at 5/10 when the lineup is very soft and I'm feeling most confident in my game

I don't recommend shot taking when you are a solid player/winner at your regular game. Why let so many hours of profit rest on short term luck? You don't get rich/rolled in this game overnight imo. *The exception would be if you know the customers and the lineup is super soft.

My attitude on this has changed a bit with experience. Plus poker is not my main source of income. It is my vacation and home improvement fund.

Note: I am a P4MS fan.

Because you want to make more money? Just because you can't do so risk free doesn't mean you shouldn't try. Besides, short term luck can go in the other direction too.

Interesting post. I fell into the group 1 category and often though about taking shots at 2/5. The game is filled with same players that play 1/3 and is very soft. I always feared variance but I can I grinded up my roll to 10k from scratch and finally get my first game of 2/5 with no worries of going busto and feel like I would have been playing with scared money if I didnt wait. But thats just me.

Well I'm a regular 1/2 NL player & Tournament...been playing well and winning so when i got my BR to $2000 I decided to take a small shot at 2/5 NL...I bought in for $300 just to test the waters...If i lost it I'd go back to 1/2NL...but just wanted to see how it was different and how the players were playing....It was awful fishey and I got my $300 to a stable $1,000 in 4 hours...

Since I was up and I had a good grasp of the table I kept playing there...
I doubled someone up when i had top trips and he made a full house so was back to $500...Kept at it and got to a stable $1,200 in 2 more hours...

From that $1,200 I got a hot run of cards and played my best game, making good folds and getting paid on value bets... The last major hand i played i was on the button with 99 and I raised to $35 someone reraised to $80 4 callers and i was last to act so i called with 99....Flop was Q95 (rainbow)...Initial raiser pushes $450 allin, another player pushes $250 allin...I push allin behind with middle set...other players fold...and i win a massive pot with my set of nines...Cashed out shortly after for $2850 from my $300 shot at 2/5....So it was a nice shot at a higher limit and now i feel more comfortable/less embarrassed to be playing at that level...Will now consider slowly playing more 2/5 NL.

Cheers,
Fuzzylion

I was in a different situation than most; I had a backup plan, and I still do. I moved up to 2/5 with $5k to my name and a lot of college loan debt. I polarized my life; make it as a poker pro, or get an office job like the rest of the world. I can't express how happy I am that I made that decision. It is absolutely key if you hope to play poker for a living.

I'm a group 1 player with a $2200 BR currently. I love action. Recently, I've been taking a jump from 1/2 to 1/3 and have noticed a slight difference I'm profitability. I've played 2 sessions of 2/5 and loved what I saw. (First session was +$650 2nd session was -$125). I love the idea of shot taking. But maybe not all the time. I'm planning on playing 2/5 4-5 sessions a month until I hit a ~6k BR to grind it regularly.

Until then I'll be playing 1/2 and 1/3 I think.
