Playing 1/2 at my local casino
I JUST doubled up w 9's full of 3's so I'm at $450.
Utg straddles for $4 3 callers I have KK in the cutoff. I make it $25 to go.
Guy in the BB cold calls it w $430ish in his stack. He was wearing the casino bad beat hat that you recieve when you are at the table when the bad beat jackpot is hit so I assumed he was a reg
straddle folds so does everyone else.
Flop is 234rainbow
He checks to me
I bet $40
He re-raises it to $150
I tank for a little bit and fold bc I figured I would eventually have to call him all the way down if I call that raise. Plus I didn't wanna just give back what I had just made w a one pair hand. What do you think?

I think there's a lot of space between 55 and QQ and also this is a LHE forum.

Any other history with him? So he is l/c with a5+? What did you put him on? As played I would fold but I could also see calling with 275 remaining.

Strange play by V on the Flop.

Standard play usually has V raising on Turn with a made hand but with V wanting to get stacks in a naked over-pair is a fold this deep.

Some reads on V would help a lot. What kind of range does he have based on the preflop call? How has he played big hands? Does he overvalue TP/overpairs? etc. etc.

In a vacuum, this is usually a fold this deep (Edit: meaning, at a 1/2 game against a typical loose passive V). Overpairs can often be RIO hands in spots like this; as you suggested, if we call the c/r, folding to a turn bet on most cards wouldn't make much sense.

It's not at all uncommon to see QQ played this way. Lesser pairs "protecting against AK" or spazzing is more player dependent. So if our only read is that the guy was at this casino at least once before... We should probably be paying a bit more attention. Nonetheless his cold calling range out of the blinds should be pair heavy. So he's got QQ, sets or overplayed middling pairs. As mentioned above we need some reads to make a better decision. Flop c/r are often 2p. Does this guy call with 34 or 23s? If so he also has 45s in his range.

It's not a terrible fold but it's the best hand a fair amount of the time.

The fact that we fold because we just doubled up and are afraid of losing what could be a big pot tells me we are probably playing scared money to some extent and as such it's going to be difficult to make the correct play in a lot of spots.

Raise a little more preflop. Flop seems like a fold against an unknown. You can also check this flop a lot for pot control against aggressive villains, because you are very vulnerable to bluffs and semibluffs.

I would probably check the flop. Most players aren't folding Ax and 5x to my standard flop c-bet anyways, so I'm not as concerned about an ace on the turn, since I would have lost anyways if that improves my opponent's hand.

Definitely raising more pf. As played, its way too villain dependent. Based on OP's information I like the call gii on the turn line but at the same time when OP says "bbj hat" makes me think this is a passive guy who just always has it here. Some passive guys do overplay PP's here sometimes too. More pp combos we beat than sets than we lose to. Even BBJ hat wearers know when to fold pf with poopy 2p or straight hands that hit this board. I agree with iraisetoomuch, call flop and try to gii ott.

You assumed V has AA?
Odds are that he doesn't have AA, right?
This fish would never have laid down KK!
