As played I chose to c-bet $60, which I think might have been a mistake given his stack size. My plan was to double/triple barrel cards that gave me equity on the turn, but my sizing on the flop makes it difficult to retain any fold equity on a river bluff. I think I should have either bet smaller on the flop, say $30-40.

***HAND***

Pot: $97
Flop: J54

Villain checks, Hero bets $60, Villain calls.

Pot: $217

Turn: K

Villain ($325 behind) checks
Hero ...

As played, villain sounds fit-or-fold and decidedly non-tricky. Therefore I go with the obvious play, fire once and then give up unless we improve. $50 -> $60 sounds good.

I'm folding to a raise and I have almost no turn betting range if he calls flop and checks turn, I guess maybe 8. If turn checks through and he checks river, I'm only betting if we have > 1 pair.

Hand seems pretty straight forward.
Why would you only fire once? Because he's fit or fold, that means once V calls flop he's rarely folding turn? Let's say V has 77 here. Are you saying a fit-or-fold player is folding this on the flop (quite a bad fold) making his turn range skewed toward J-X+? Or are you saying since he called flop he's decided to call all the way down with 77?

If you do think he has 77 in his flop range, why would you not c-bet river if you river a pair and turn checked through? Since he's not tricky, we don't have to worry about being c/r bluffed so can v-bet thin. Of course we'd bet very small if we bet river.

^^^

That's fair, can probably go for two streets with 2nd pair if he's predictable enough, especially if he checks river and we can assume he would bet any top pair hand after we check the turn back.

What do you mean by the bolded? Our equity is well behind.
When I say we retain more equity when called with a smaller bet, I mean that we can hit a 9/T and be good more often, because he will have more smaller pairs and A-high type hands in his range. If we bet large those outs become less reliable because more of his continuing range is Jx+.

The effect is not large in this case, which is why it was my last point, but I think it is there enough to mention.
