1/2NL AA SB Preflop Size

I had Aces in the SB. There were 4 limpers. I raised to $20 preflop and took it down. I been playing a tight game but according to some players, they might see me as a loose preflop raiser as i was raising quite a bit preflop. Even a guy remarked on how many times i raised before the flop but each time i did, i had a hand, but didn't show.

My general rule at 1/2NL with premium holdings is to raise 5x + Limper. But if there are say 2 limpers, i would just raise to $15 instead of $14. In the blinds however... i tend to raise a bit more as I'm out of position.

When I saw the 1st guy limped. I'm thinking okay raise to $12. But as 3 more limpers came... the number would be $18. But since I'm in the SB... i wanted to raise it a bit more as I'm OOP. I raised to $20 and everyone folds which is perfectly fine since i won the pot.

Now i'm looking at the pot. There was $3 preflop. There were 4 limpers so theres $11 preflop. When i made it $20 total... was it $30 preflop. Not $31 because i was the SB and put in $1. So for anyone to call... its $18 and pot is $30 which makes it a bigger than pot size raise preflop.

What would be your standard raize size here be? If i played online, i would just pot it which would be $15 total. I have done $15 here back a few years ago but when i did this, i usually got 3 callers at the minimum. So i made it $20.

Is $20 too much or too little here? When i thought about it... i thought that was a great size as it was more than pot size preflop as it will cost $18 to call when theres $30 there and its not too much. I know there are ppl here who mention they raise $15 minimum with a premium hand even without limpers so i assume guys like you would be making it $25 minimum?

I raise it as much as I think one or 2 people will call. $20 might be optimistic my standard would be more like $17 but some tables I'll make it $27 and not be surprised at 3 caller. I think alot depends on table dynamics (lots of raised multiway pots make it more, limp folding rare raises keep it on smaller side) but I don't think I would ever make it less tahn $15 here.

Re: 1/2NL AA SB Preflop Size

I like to look at the players who limped and keep a mental log of who has limp/called in the past (and obviously with what hands if it got to showdown) and for how much. Are these guys chronic limp/callers or do they limp/fold often? Had anyone raised to $20 so far in the game? I wouldn't make a raise that big if it would make it the largest raise i'd seen so far. In the games i play in $17 is a good amount for a top 10 hand, but i keep a standard $12 PF raise most times. Also, stack size is a consideration...if the first two guys are sitting on $85 there's a good chance they're going to muck for almost 1/4 of their stack.

I'm making it $20-$25 here every time. Sucks that they all folded, but NH.

I raise to at least 17 from the SB every time, and 17 is pretty low (like 1-2 limpers who generally limp/fold). More often than not im raising to 20+

also stop making so many general questions threads. Post a hand, it's poker, there arent hard and fast rules.

this guy currently has 11 of the 24 new threads on here, two of which have been locked, some others which are general question threads, and other hand history questions which use pretty poor form and are hard to read.
