Truth be told, I think the dark bet was a pretty good sign that villain was bluffing. He's basically screaming "I have a super strong hand here, one that doesn't matter what happens on the river" with that bet, and I think it's a weak-means-strong tell.
I also think it might have been that villian had a hand like a random 8 that had an OESD, and figured "Well, if I miss, I'll bluff, if I hit, I'll bet for value - since I'm betting anyway, I'll bet dark - when I bluff, it looks stronger, when I hit, it hides the straight draw."
I was pretty convinced that he didn't have a made straight - wouldn't you want to see if the board pairs/a higher straight can be made? A set would want to see if 4-to-a-straight come in. Two pair... possible, but unlikely, because you don't want to get counterfeited.
I just thought it was a very weird line. I couldn't think of a single value hand that wouldn't wait to see the river. I beat very little, but he's basically polarized between T8 and a bluff. The A
didn't complete any draws, so I called.
As played, I tanked, called, tabled, and he mucked, then he gave me a fist bump for a good hero call.
