It makes a ton of economic sense, given that it only marginally decreases television license fees while significantly increasing the amounts that NFL owners can extract from public subsidies from other cities.

If the NFL were less popular, they would need to have a team here, though.

BTW, Doug is totally right about the blackout rule. Remember, most football fans can't afford tickets anyway. The NFL blackout rule immensely harms those fans if there is a local team. It's really only the elites who can attend games who benefit from a local team.

When I just read about the issue, I saw that the Raiders were not filling their stadium in LA before they moved back to Oakland.

Correct. I had season tickets.

I wish there were more blackouts here. I don't give a crap about either local team and would certainly like to see more games from around the league.

Maybe it is getting old/bitter, but I'm over the whole pro sports and stadium thing. Here in Denver, they had a cultural district and mass trans district across the 6 counties. Add some sales tax, you were basically propping up downtown area in the metro at the expense of the outlying people. Cool museums and stuff, so OK. Redistributing wealth from people 60 miles away to make the heart of the city more cultural? Yep, def happened.

Then they decided that MLB was required to be real city and this big push about economic benefit to city. More sales tax, and sure enough businesses in downtown and the team ownership make maybe billions of $ of our building them a stadium. Yes, downtown real-estate and night life business + hotels have reaped huge rewards. Then, carry that sales tax through longer than planned and add to it to buy Pat a new Broncos stadium. He wasn't actually a billionaire before, but now...

NFL stadium blackmail is dumb. I don't own any downtown property. The increased sales tax revenue didn't lead to lower rates later. There are 6 counties here funding a few people getting richer. If your NFL team can't fund its own stadium, it sucks at being an NFL team. Go ahead. Go to LA. My 0.02.

Last night I had a hand that went like this:

What a beautiful f****** beating
09-04-2014 , 11:35 PM
So you check raised the eight high flop with T9s with a backdoor flushdraw, and then proceeded to bet 3 bet the turn when you turned a straight flushdraw, only to check fold the river and escape the loss of one more bet? That's preposterous.

Tarpon?

Babar, you're the Merge guy, right? I have a little money on Carbon that I play poker with occasionally. Being in the U.S., would I munge up my poker account if I made sports bets on their sportsbook?
09-05-2014 , 02:39 AM
no, you're fine to go ahead and sports bet on there

Yes, that's exactly what happened.

No way, LA has to take the Raiders back first.

I was at the greatest table last night at Commerce. There was a guy capping PF and giving up for one bet OTF. Unicorns.

Spoiler:
I only managed to lose 9bbs.

Nice feeling to relieve the ringside bookie of a few K (baht) at the Muay Thai fight in Phuket tonight, speeding back to the telly on the motorbike (successfully, sorry wbatas), with the lapping waves of the beach to my right and the catcalls of the massage girls (and boys?) music to my ears.

After I turn pro/make millions I think I'll start a Thai boxing handicapping service.

So I overlimp 87s multiway, flop 865, raise a flop bet, get two coldcallers and the bettor folds. Turn Q, river A and somehow mhig. Bettor says, "good raise, I folded pocket queens". Is this ever true, like ever?
