I totally agree with both your parenting philosophy (that is what I teach my kids as well) and also this quoted statement.
As a matter of fact, all my bitching is exactly about us being those people and those companies that do hire the best people. That is, we as employees and employers should do what it takes to make sure that unnecessary stereotypes don't creep into our thinking and to let the merits speak for themselves. I don't advocate for laws or even company policies about stereotyping, I advocate that we challenge ourselves and those around us so that we are that company that has the competitive edge.
That is, if I were in charge and suspected sexism in hiring, I wouldn't make everyone attend another useless seminar. Instead, I'd give everyone ten resumes and rank them from 1-10, but on half of them switch the names from traditionally male to traditionally female and vice versa. Then we can sit down and talk about how (a) hard evidence proved my suspicions wrong, or (b) why different people ranked the resumes differently.
And yeah, our children should be prepared for a world where employers have literal code words for different races. But they don't necessarily need to accept that's the way it'll always be everywhere, they can go out and fix what they can.
