Why is it a bombshell? You said you married an Asian and I stereotyped kids of being the same race as their parents.

It's a stereotype that's rational - the vast majority are. Yet, there are obvious counterexamples, such as adopted children.

As a matter of fact, there are enough counterexamples that if I were to hold firmly to the stereotype that kids must look like their parents, and refused to believe that a white person could ever have a non-white son, I would be mocked.

And yet, the stereotype is totally true and it's totally rational to have it. What makes it offensive is its use in clear counterexamples or when people hold onto the stereotype in the face of contrary evidence.

Cali, or anyone. I'll be honest, I know nothing about work place environments and I know nothing about being a victim of workplace racism or stereotyping. I don't doubt that it exists and its unforunate.

That being said I'll have to exPlain to my son that he's likely going to be treated unfairly in the workplace and the only thing he can do about it is make sure that he out works and outperforms all his co-workers so that it would be fiscally impossible to be ignkred for job placent-promotion etc becusse while I don't doubt stereotyping will exist I also don't doubt that companies that do nothing but hire the best and most qualified candidates for all positions also exists and these companies will eventually outperform and put the other ones out of business.

As a parent, is this a bad approach to take? Is there a better way to prepare him for the real world (this is actual question, in case it doesn't come off that way).

This is also why I enjoy poker so much, there's not a lot of politics to deal with. If you are better than other people and outwork them you get to make more moeny then them...now whether or not it's fair that you get taxed at a higher rate for working harder at the exact same Job is. Question we can save for a future thread

I totally agree with both your parenting philosophy (that is what I teach my kids as well) and also this quoted statement.

As a matter of fact, all my bitching is exactly about us being those people and those companies that do hire the best people. That is, we as employees and employers should do what it takes to make sure that unnecessary stereotypes don't creep into our thinking and to let the merits speak for themselves. I don't advocate for laws or even company policies about stereotyping, I advocate that we challenge ourselves and those around us so that we are that company that has the competitive edge.

That is, if I were in charge and suspected sexism in hiring, I wouldn't make everyone attend another useless seminar. Instead, I'd give everyone ten resumes and rank them from 1-10, but on half of them switch the names from traditionally male to traditionally female and vice versa. Then we can sit down and talk about how (a) hard evidence proved my suspicions wrong, or (b) why different people ranked the resumes differently.

And yeah, our children should be prepared for a world where employers have literal code words for different races. But they don't necessarily need to accept that's the way it'll always be everywhere, they can go out and fix what they can.

WTF is this thread? And why am I going to read it all?

And I've already seen HB mention the pill and chopstick story twice, and I'm only on post #60.

I posted that twice? Sorry about that. Meanwhile, I'm getting pretty good w/ the things. Well, at least to the point that I don't fumble very much. And at Sunday's lunch (Kona Grill at Fashion Square Mall) I finished every piece of rice, one at a time!

My wife and I (we are both Asian) go to a low end Chinese buffet maybe once a month or so. Everybody is given a fork and spoon, no exceptions. If you want chopsticks, you get some disposable ones yourself from the sushi section. We always end up using everything, different foods are easier to eat with different utensils.

That's a nice thought, but it's not true. It's usually the most ruthless that end up on top.

That's why I liked stock trading so much. Your "compensation" is (almost) entirely dependent on your skill and effort.

I'm Asian. Or maybe Pacific Islander, I'm confused with the boxes they give me. I stereotype everybody until they prove otherwise.
Old guy/lady - never bluffing
White Jewish guy - smart calculating player
Young white guy with hoodie and headphones - douchebag
Asian guy - *****' crazy, never folding
Black guy - don't know, I'm in Colorado...

Sorry. I never dreamed that I was starting a thread that would go on so long with so little poker theory. Please forgive me. I was really only asking about poker theory.

Bob-

I'm gonna ask the obvious, "How old are you?"

Then I'll probably enlist Howard's help to explain to you what's not old.
