Re: The mindset of 6/12 players at Oaks

You'd be really surprised at just how much $ that some low stakes and mid stakes players actually have. Both on the high and low side. I have met many who are very wealthy and just don't like to play that high. Don't be fooled by appearances. Ran into one guy who only plays 8/16 and lower who owns a boatload of houses. Really nice guy. Sloppy dresser, loose player. He told me he likes to come with like a few racks or so worth of $ and see what he can do=plays lot of hands, coldcalls a ton etc but truly enjoys himself. Never gets upset about losing. He has winning session once in a while so that keeps him coming back plus he just likes to play so why shouldn't he play the way he wants to etc

I will, at some point.

However, the one 30-60 regular I've played with (he sits at 6-12 on occasion) is definitely not that type. I'm sure you know who I'm talking about -- the black guy who sits in two chairs stacked and turned around. (His nickname is a city.) He's always pacing around the table, ranting, raving and talking trash. Total character.

I'm told he's been playing there for many years. From the limited time I've played with him, he actually looks like a pretty good player, as far as I can tell. He has an unusual, unpredictably aggressive style, and I always feel really uncomfortable when I'm in a hand with him.

Appearances can be deceiving.

LOL. He said one of the funniest things I've heard at a poker table tonight. While berating another player for costing him a pot by playing "badly": "If everyone plays correctly, I will win!"

Re: The mindset of 6/12 players at Oaks

Saw a new one last night. What a character!

Old white dude, and I mean old -- he's 90 if he's a day. He's wearing a ragged tan overcoat and a big, red, floppy fishing hat that gives him the appearance of a mushroom. He's got a white trash bag stowed under his seat, full of old newspapers, empty cups, sugar packets, etc. At one point he pulls it out, roots around for a container of potato salad, and starts scooping it into his mouth with an old coffee stirrer.

I'm stuck at the end of the table squinting to see the cards at the other end, so when a seat in the middle of the table opens up, I claim it. Old guy is next to me, and says he wants the seat because he can't see the flop, so I let him have it. He moves, and proceeds to drag two monster pots worth $400-500 taken together, one by cracking my AA with 52s.

He's an absolutely terrible player. Plays 80% of his starting hands, and his postflop play is predictable and atrocious. Every once in awhile he drags a big pot with an inside straight or rr flush, but over time his stack dwindles. He's frequently confused about what's going on, at one point turning over his cards and declaring "straight" when he's got nothing. I bluff him out of two big pots with a bet on the river.

I didn't mind taking his chips though; he was playing with money he shouldn't have won in the first place! Plus, I had a sneaking suspicion he's got about $2 million sitting in the bank or under his mattress or wherever...

When anyone sits at the table, we are all agreeing to take each others money that could be used for other things. That's just the way this game is.

The reality is that he had won that money fairly (he paid to chase and hit), and most likely he doesn't have much money to be throwing away.

If you need something beyond this tacit agreement, maybe the idea of providing a service by keeping the games going for when people want to play will do, but we are entering handwaving territory again.

FYP

You'll learn how to deal with him. There's always a certain amount of discomfort at first.
