My goal since I've just started out:

1. 100hrs or 30days/whichever comes first...
2. Learn
3. Play better
4. Move up
5. Enjoy playing

Not sure if #1 is a realistic goal or if something I should change. Would really appreciate feedback on that.

In regards to moving up... should I just skip 4/8 and move to 8/16? I understand the issues with rake, my only real concern is if I'm just making to big of a jump.

Look forward to the replies...

I don't understand goal #1. What are you trying to accomplish in 100 hours or 30 days? The others seem like reasonable things to strive for.

Probably should have clarified #1

Play 100hrs or 30days of poker and evaluate where I am and if I should move up to next level.

Hope that helps.

Do you have a steady job which pays your bills, and on top provide enough surplus income so that you could lose $100/week and not end up selling blood plasma for food?

If no, stop gambling.

If yes, then consider money irrelevant between 2/4-8/16 and focus on goals 2 through 5.

You'll know when to move up. You'll know because you're getting bored, that everything is predictable, and people are open books.

Make it a goal to identify one new thing wrong with every opponent's play per session, and to identify three handa where you made a mistake.

Selling plasma not that bad really, I did it in college.

Everyone I know who made it to mid-high did so by using horrible bankroll management and running super hot. The rest never made it past small stakes and eventually killed themselves. There is no in between. Having a decent job only prolongs the latter scenario which is a fate far worse than death as it involves years of posting in this dreadful forum. Sell everything you have, jump into some good 40-80 games, and commit suicide ASAP if you go busto.

I'll agree it's the least bad things of what someone desperate for money can do for money.

It certainly beats taking out a Backpage ad.

I don't understand. I found a gently-used washer/dryer on Backpage for a great price.

Agreed, when selling plasma to play poker, the actual selling of the plasma is probably harmless relative to the other things happening in someone's life.

I actually considered doing it in later years just for some extra dough, but never got around to it. It's not like I was desperate for money in college either; I had a full scholarship and worked most of the time. I just wanted extra cash to spend on music.
I would go straight from the plasma center to the record store.

I am glad I am not the only one to arrive in this fashion.

On another note, you guys should be grateful you're allowed to give blood. They won't accept mine.

The dryer was extra. We've gotten good use out of it, but I think it's on its last legs.

OP, those are some good goals, now you just have to figure out how to best accomplish those goals.

I was in your spot a couple years ago: barely rolled for 4-8 and itching to play bigger. Once I realized the rake was my biggest opponent at those stakes, I took shots at every opportunity, as long as I felt I had an edge. Gl

Absolutely. I was mostly kidding but seriously in today's live environment nobody really can make it anymore without a prop salary. At least that's what I've seen.

I thought about this more and it's just terrifying. The only reason I ever made it was the bike propping and $15/hour promo (and best 40/80 game of 2012). Without it.....I dunno. It really does seem like everyone goes broke other than the big potato.

I had a hell of a downswing, but still not broke. Low overhead FTW.
