Is limit my game?

Hi there,

This is my first ever post. I started playing 3-6 limit earlier this year and have had pretty bad results. I came from the NL world first about a year ago where I won two tournaments and cashed in three. All my friends say NL is my game but I wanted to try Limit to help build my bankroll. I've had one winning session out of five so far and that wasn't even a big win. Should i just keep with the NL or grind it out with the donks? Thanks for your help,

JCali

Re: Is limit my game?

The fun thing is that this is the first thread I read after reading Jessee's "realization" post.

What the hell, I'll pretend to be a moderator.

Welcome to the forums, Jcali!

Please read the FAQ.

You might need a bigger sample size.......

i'm going to give you the standard answer:

lolsamplesize.

your sample size is far too small. you may be running bad. you may need to learn the differences between limit and nl before you start having winning sessions. the rake is prohibitive at small stakes.

if you play anything like the nl guys that i see at my casino, you won't last. limit and nl are such different games. you cannot play limit as you would nl and expect to win.

Re: Is limit my game?

I'm going to take a stab here and say that given you cashed in three NLHE tournaments last year and two of those were wins, and you're asking if limit hold'em is your game, I'm guessing that your sample size for both games is very small.

3/6 limit live is comparable to bashing yourself over the head with a blunt object over and over again.

play 8/16 minimum and see how you feel.

Well, it does feel good when you stop.

hahaha. indeed.

OP, my point was that with the high rake, the tremendous mix of bad players/nits, and variance in general, low limit hold em is just a tough spot to win.

And if you do, winning $6/12 an hour isn't that fulfilling, especially in a casino.

Re: Is limit my game?

Numerous articles/books/forum posts have been written on the difference between limit and NL. You would be wise to spend a lot of time reading to understand the nuance between NL and Limit and the different skills required to win at the different levels of each game.

FAQ thread is a good starting point.

Welcome to the forum.

Read the FAQ, read a couple of the recommended basic books, post some hands here, focus on making good decisions, don't quit your dayjob . Try to play 8/16 if the rake+ tip is over 4$, otherwise no money can be made long term, see it as going to the movies.

Unless you are losing at a huge rate for 100 hrs, looking at results before a few hundred hrs of play is useless: the standard deviation per hr of limit holdem' is 12 to 16 times your win rate. In one hr of play, 68% of the time you'll be up/down a rack, 95% of the time you'll be up/down two racks (in a 4/8 chip game where you only win between zero and 8 chips per hr long term).

Have fun!

Re: Is limit my game?

I'm not a good player after 8 years of Hold'em. Started 2003 at tournaments. 2006 limit. 3/6, 4/8, 6/12, 8/16, 10/20, 15/30 and 20/40. mostly 3/6, 4/8 and 6/12.

I can barely beat the game for a few dollars per hour. It takes time unless it comes natural.

Play the games you like, are best at and study.

Have fun.

Re: Is limit my game?

My 1st post as well.
I wouldn't recommend to anybody to grind $3/$6 its the poker equivalent of a slot machine with no bet max button IMO

Re: Is limit my game?

What I like most about limit is that it's so much easier to keep track of the pot size. Also you don't have to wait for the dealer to count out someone's bet when they go all in. And calling with K or Q high. And betting A high for value. Stacks of chips that I can't even see over, etc.

You might be better off using NL to build your bankroll while taking shots at 4/8 6/12 8/16 LHE

Small stakes NL is more conducive to sitting back and waiting for people to throw their stack at you. Grinding 3/6 limit to build your bankroll is going to be soul crushing due to rake and player pool.

Re: Is limit my game?

I don't understand the advice to play 8/16. A lot of times playing 8/16 will only result in losing a lot more money than playing an unbeatable 3/6 game. Playing 8/16 isn't worth it if you don't know what you're doing.

I assume someone trying to build a bankroll is a semi competent player. 8/16 is a great limit for that, you don't risk much, people play terrible but give some action, and the rake won't kill you.

If you want to learn the game then 3/4 table online at 20c/40c and move up slowly. It plays the same as live 8/16 but you won't build a 40/80 bankroll that way.
