I've been fighting that for a while because by not sweating the small stuff I felt like I was conceding, letting other people win and dictate terms. But it's even worse to sweat it, be stressed out, then lose and feel bad about it anyway.
I think it's the difference in approach.

Take traffic, for example, a subject you get so stressed out about, it's almost funny. So you are stuck in traffic, so what, why get so emotional, what's done is done. See it as an opportunity (yay, I get to hear that football podcast I wanted to hear, I finally have some quiet time to think about stuff, etc.).

Take each situation for what it is. Acknowledge what you can change, but also acknowledge what you can't (lol, that sounds so AA). Nothing is ever going to be 100% awesome. In fact, most awesome results, stuff you are really proud of are the fruits of hard work, difficult times and lots of moments of frustration. If you think that by accepting "a job" and "doing it" you will be happy for the rest of your life, then you are kidding yourself.

Jesse, have you read Elements of Poker? Now might be a good time to read or re-read it. Or you could get some Buddhist-style escape from suffering from other sources, e.g. Pema Chödrön's Start Where You Are: A Guide to Compassionate Living.

I have read it, but a re-read wouldn't hurt anybody.

It's life outside of your job that fulfills a life. I agree, it can be tough to see past your job sometimes since it takes up the bulk of your waking hours, but it's true.
It seems to me Jesse can work at either poker or engineering or w/e and sustain comparable incomes/hours/etc.
The question that I would ask is which option leaves him better suited to take advantage of life outside of his job.
