I'm reminded of the first poker psychology book that I ever read. "Beyond Tells" was a good read especially for a beginner. I had never explored the many differing personality types in such a way. Life scripts. Action and reaction based personalities. The pitfalls of each personality type were described. Jesse's ex sounds like an action based personality, while I have a close friend that clearly has a reaction based personality. He is the quintessential "party hardy" as described in the book. He'll look for and pounce on any sign of a weakness or flaw someone may have. Some people think he's just a dick, but I know that he's hoping to spark a reaction. It takes a pigeon and a drop which results in the payoff. In his case, the pigeon is the person that he's picking on and the drop is whatever insult he can think of. The payoff is the reaction that he gets from people.
In the case of action based personalities, the problems that require solving are the pigeon. The drop is the solution put into action, and the payoff is a feeling of accomplishment. Some people seek out problems to solve as Jesse mentioned.
It seems that the people running the tournament are neither action nor reaction based personalities. I'm guessing they're "nonaction" based personalities. They saw the problem and basically took the easy way out. Sure, they may not have the mental capacity to figure out a better solution than the bye thing, but that's not the problem. The problem is that the casino hired a bunch of nonaction based personalities and now the phunkphish is mad at them.
Solution? Hire Jesse's ex as tourney manager. Problem solved. Everyone wins.
