Dear SSHE, I never thought this would happen to me but.....

I had a brain aneurysm on a river value bet.

CP 8/16. Usual cast of bad / loose players. Game is good, but not great.

Three limpers (two loose passives and one LAG who surprisingly limped in) and I limp 57 in the CO.

Button raises. He is not entirely clueless on starting hands but seems not to understand position or what hands play well multiway. Last orbit he raised the field from the SB with KTo.

Blinds and limpers call (I am thinking about backraising at this point), one of the loose passive limpers 3 bets all in and everybody calls.

Flop is J52

Blinds check, LAG bets, call, I call, button raises, blinds fold, LAG calls, call and button calls.

Turn is the 7. Checked to me and I donk (this may seem bad, but button also liked to check behind on the big streets without the nuts). Button calls, LAG calls, loose passive calls.

River is the 9. Checked to me and I....?

Flame away.

You're thinking about backraising preflop but you don't want to value bet the river? Bet.

Bet for sure but if it's raised I'm torn between folding and calling.

Can't see button showing up with two diamonds after raising on the flop, then just calling on the turn, VB away, your donk bet out on the turn might make them think you were semi bluffing your flush draw.

Why is making them think the turn was a FD semi-bluff a good reason to VB?

OK, so maybe this is the interesting part.

At first I thought you'd just missed a VB on the river, but this statement makes me think you did VB it, got CR'd, which you called? only to lose to the flush? Is that correct?

JFC this hand was like a year ago.

I checked behind and was filled with immediate regret.

Not to worry. You made up for it with that QQ hand.

Madcity,
Welcome to the forum. Reading the archives is a great way to get yourself accustomed to the forum and learn along the way. However, typically it's best not to respond to these posts (as noted, this hand was over a year ago). Save responses for the more recent and topical discussions.

Why? Is that an official forum guideline or an opinion? I'd never seen this thread and think the ensuing discussion, including the 2012 comments, are helpful to my learning.

So why on earth would you consider a backraise preflop? What am I missing?

On the flop, is there any merit to a raise? Reminds me of the SSHE examples:
  • Big pot
  • Bettor on wide range; doesn't have to have top pair
  • Middle pair + BDFD give us equity if we end up getting 3bet.
  • Tons of hands we'd like to fold that might consider it -- 66 through TT, Q5s-A5s or whatever, etc.

Having to show down vs the all-in isn't bad because we're doing this to protect showdown value, not entirely as a semibluff.

Re: Dear SSHE, I never thought this would happen to me but.....

preflop-a back raise is horrible especially in an 8/16 at CP
flop-IMO im raising all day long and twice on sunday never just calling, but you get the same result, on the turn its checked to you
turn-its an easy bet, your not getting a check raise, just letting people see free cards is crazy
river-VB youd be insane not to unless you asked to see everyones hands if it checked down
