While I haven't read the book, I find a lot of similar arguments to be really weak.
Automation replaces human labor only in the scenario where the total work to be done remains constant. If you assume that technology allows the total work to increase, then automation allows for greater productivity.
A lot of people over the years have predicted technology to destroy civilization - the printing press, the telephone, the Internet, etc. It's pretty funny to read about what people considered threats in the past.
What is probably true is that the nature of work will change. More and more, people have to learn how to manage computers.
