4/8 Botched Hand?

I think I probably botched this hand but not sure…

Live casino 4/8

Hero with 8h-8d on the button.
Three limpers, hero raises.
Big blind calls, limpers call.
Five players, 2.5 big bets.
Flop Ad-Ks-Ah
Checks around, hero bets.
Highjack calls.
Two players, 3.5 big bets
Turn 2s
Highjack checks, Hero bets.
Highjack calls.
River 9d
Highjack checks, hero bets.
Highjack calls.

Villain is very well known regular. Very loose passive, calling station. Plays way too many hands, underreps strong hands. I felt like he could have had a weaker pocket pair, straight draw, turned a flush draw or even just Q high hoping I was betting J-10.

Would a better line just been to check back the turn?

Re: 4/8 Botched Hand?

betting the river for value with 88's on this board is a bit ambitious. i think betting QQ's here would be as well.

betting the turn is fine, but i would check back the river. there aren't enough hands in his river calling range that 88's are ahead of.

Thanks. Good to know it wasn't a complete disaster.

The line you take here is highly dependent on the player who calls the flop bet.

If he is the kind of player who takes a card off on the flop with something like JT, then the line should be bet/bet/check.

If he is the kind that will go to showdown with a pair of Kings or any other pocket pair, then the line should be bet/check/hope for a free showdown.

Your line would be my default in a live 4/8 game since there are so many players who fit both categories. Whatever he showed down, file it away for next time since this situation comes up so often.

I would bet the turn and be done with it. Yes you want to bet here to get value from the bdfd and any of the other cheese draws he calling with.

Otr you're now only getting value from a lower pp or a deuce which who knows he.might not even call with that. At this point only better hands are calling you and he's tossing his busted draws. No shame in checking back here imo.

I would echo the sentiments of the posters above by checking the river. I don't see what value you get from betting, as you'll fold out all busted draws and get called with a lot of weak Ks.

Yeah, I think I check behind on this river. You're really only beating a lower pocket pair here.

Other than that, fine.

i think even the turn bet is close, but yeah, no reason to bet the river

I agree, but think a bet probably goes in better with us betting the turn, than checking back the turn and having to make a river decision.

If our read is strong enough that we can comfortably fold to river lead when we check back the turn (or maybe comfortably call if he's very induce-able & peeling very lightly,) then I think checking the turn becomes more attractive.
