In a kill game, if a player wins two hands in a row, with the second win needing to meet certain criteria determined by the casino, the next hand is played at an increased stake.
When you win a pot, you are passed a button that says "Leg Up" on one side.
If you then win the next pot (with some qualifier - of the two rooms I play at, one requires a 5+ BB pot, the other simply requires that a flop is dealt), you flip the Leg Up button over - the other side says KILL.
You are now the "Killer" and the hand is played for more money. In this case, since it's 8/16 half kill, the kill pot is played as a 12/24 hand and the "Killer" posts 1 small bet ($12) on the kill button. When it's his turn to act, he can either check his option or raise.
