Re: 2017! NC/LC THREAD -- Small Stakes, 40 years to Mars

After the first bama TD, I got Clemson at +10.5 at -120. I should've bet the money line. Congrats on your W Leo. Thanks for the confirmation on Clemson, everyone else that chimed in.

That's OK.

There are wizards running around. I've played AvoidThe9to5 HU, and he's way better than I am. OnTheRail15 is more beast than most mortals want to plays cards with. Several other people who play here (say ZOMG and DrOlsen and others) are sick good at LHE. To bravely say "I can hold my own"? Unless you have, you probably can't. Every time I talk a hand with DosXX or DeathDonkey, they sort of shake heads sadly. There are people who are really good at poker. If you're not playing with them already, it is probably safe to assume they're better and work on from there.

Could be you're +EV in the 3K LHE. I took that_pope's comment as neighborly good advice. If you sit daily in the Commerce 100/200 or in the Bay101 80/160 games and crush all comers, then you should probably be offended that he said "pass on a pretty tough tournament." The Monster Stack or the Colossus seem like great spots. I'm getting close to being old enough for the Seniors. The LHE events seem like way tougher once you add in juice, taxes, etc.
I'm not trying to say that I'm the best player in the world or that there aren't hundreds of players better than me at LHE, I just think I can sit a 3K 6-max and not be wildly outclassed - and honestly, I could be wrong. But who cares? You don't get better without challenging yourself. Maybe I play it and go "wow, I have a lot of work to do." That's okay. I can afford to lose whatever I invest in myself in the event or I wouldn't even be talking about it.

You guys go ahead and save your money. I'll take my chances if I want to.

Seriously? You would expect that pros would NOT be earning their living every day?

edit:BTW, for most of those guys, 3k is not even a cash game buy-in at their normal stakes. So if you're playing scared money at all, you're at a big disadvantage before the first hand is dealt.

Is there such thing as an anti password? Like if I had the anti password ********* with 2+2 written next to it and someone found it and tried to log on, the anti password would automatically lock them out and send me an email about it. Sound good? gogogogo

There is something close - I have heard of organizations replying to a phishing email ("click here, then enter your name and password") by supplying fake credentials - and then blocking the IP address used to attempt to login with the fake credentials.

Won't any hacker who knows anything use an alternate IP address? It seems like a great way to block 1,000,000 fake IP addresses for every 1 real address.

Sure, it is not a perfect strategy. It certainly wouldn't stop a government sponsored hacking organization, but it will cause problems for one guy or a small group. Forcing a hacker to work harder by changing IP addresses for every username/password he wants to try against your system is a win. It might slow him down enough to convince him to go try somewhere else. Also, this works best if you can automate the process - it is not difficult to have a system that reviews the authentication logs and then sends automatic updates to the firewall to block an IP address.

I've seen him there a few times and get annoyed the way people whisper and have to let everyone around them know he is there when they notice him.

As far as the 3k lhe goes there are probably 0 people who enter who are making the most +ev decision they could by playing it. If the guy wants to take a shot I can't imagine why he shouldn't.

I'm guessing Jason Mercier probably made a very +EV decision to play it last year.

Yeah, I don't get why people do that.

Then again, to be fair, my friends and I used to play Spot The Ho in Vegas and I'm pretty sure we were less subtle than we thought we were.

A poker player overestimating his skills and underestimating his opponents. I would never believe that possible.

It is the literal price of fame. Not that people can't be cool about it, but if you're working on your personal brand, or high Q score, or whatever the in people call it, people will recognize you. Would guess that as long as people were respectful of his time, he may have even liked people noticing, doing autographs, selfies, or saying "hi". If nobody notices someone, that person doesn't get paid zillions in ad money.

Oaks semi-reg who has a horrible reputation, to a guy texting: "Hey you. You texting about me?

Texter: "No. But I am telling people that the game just started."

Semi-reg: "Mention that I'm here. You'll have a list 20 deep in an hour."

Texter: "Okay. '30/60 starting, Semi-reg is here."

Semi-reg: "No no no you don't know jack **** about advertising. 'Semi-reg invites you to an all-night 30/60 party.'"

My personal suggestion, "Mr Floorman and Ms Floorwoman request the pleasure of your company at Table 15," was vetoed.

FWIW most semi-regs that think they're horrible are nowhere near as bad as they claim to be.

Re: 2017! NC/LC THREAD -- Small Stakes, 40 years to Mars

Random Semi-reg story. He's kind of a loud and verbose talker (which contributes to his reputation). I'm sitting next to him and at some point we end up in a hand together. I forget exactly what happened, I might have raised a 3rd person out and then lost the hand or maybe I raised and everyone folded. Either way, he thinks I made a mistake and says some stuff about it (standard).

He beckons me over like he's gonna whisper something to me, cups his hand over his mouth like he's gonna whisper something to me ... and then talks FULL VOLUME, spittle and all.

Re: 2017! NC/LC THREAD -- Small Stakes, 40 years to Mars

I'm generally tilt-resistant (in hold'em, O8 is a different story lol) but I think I've discovered my kryptonite. This guy reacts to some standard actions (raises, the flop coming down, etc) with a sound very similar to The Chamberlain:

Spoiler:

And after a few minutes of this, like the Skeksi a few seconds in, I'm thinking, "QUIET!"
