Re: New free/open source poker tracking software: fpdb

As CheapFlop stated organization is very important. And I'm trying not to put the cart before the horse but I think the HUD is critical. If you include a HUD people will follow, even if only a temp AHK HUD or something.

Well, if I can get the importer/database operational *at all* I will add support in AHK-HUD, and YourToast posted above he will likely add support in PokerObserver HUD - so I think decent HUDs are pretty much a given already.

Fozzy, it is likely this will be the first "badugi tracker" you desire, imo.

These are very good points. I think you should also consider having at least one other person allocated as "second in command", so in the event that you have to leave the project then they can take over as project leader (short of the chaotic organization mentioned by CheapFlop, then a project leader leaving is prolly the next biggest reason for [post-planning] open source project failures).

I wish I had more time as I'd love to be part of this, but sadly after I finish my second run of the "Free Ride" I'm gonna be moving house again and after I'm settled in I hope to finally get some time for a vacation. Hopefully I'll eventually get some time to help out as this has the promise of being one of the most interesting and useful open source projects we've seen here.

Re: New free/open source poker tracking software: fpdb

Hi everyone, thanks for the many responses, I'll try to answer everything

Coordination
I've put some thought into this and I think the best way to coordinate is through the fpdb sourceforge forum and bug system. When you start working on something open a bug at sourceforge to let people know so they don't implement the same thing. Once ready post/email your patches or where I can do a git pull from and I'll integrate your work into mainline fpdb. Also take a look at readme-dev.txt it contains a little information about the internals of the code. If you want to do any major rewrite or expansion please discuss it with me (or, even better, on the sourceforge forum) first.
But I don't really want to set any rules, this is what I think would work well an

As for what to do, either just implement whatever feature you want most or pick something from known-bugs-and-planned-features.txt. It is a very extensive list with things across the entire program and for pretty much any skill level. Another place to look for things to do is in the menu of the GUI - most of the entries are marked todo and haven't even been started. If enough people help we can make this a quality program fast

I invite anyone to send in their requests, and I will try to implement them as fast as I can but please be patient as I want to do things in a reasonable order to keep the code reasonably nice.

If you're interested in the day to day progress of fpdb just check the git tree, for example I recently added support for reading and displaying steals and continuation bets.

I completely agree that having a second in command is important to keep things going if I'm absent, and I intend to give people who made substantial improvements to fpdb more access and share responsibilities (if they want to).

HUD
The HUD (and pre-requisite auto-importer) are a very high priority for me, I just want to get the basic important stats working first. I would be very pleased if someone adds fpdb support to their HUD, if you're working on that or if I can change fpdb to make a HUD's life easier just let me know

I'm quite happy with how I'm preparing data for the HUD now except that I still need to add position and of course many more fields.

Steffan, it would be an understatement to say that your approach to this project is impressive. I sincerely hope this thing takes off.

Please please please please anyone with programming talent, time and poker knowledge get involved with this and help him (unfortunately I don't have any of these).

This program's potential to be great is unlimited - open source software allows the interface, substance, content, etc all to be driven by the users themselves who know what they want, how they want it, etc.

My domain www.pokerenthusiast.com needs content -- I've held it for 7 or 8 years and other than an offer for $10k that I rejected like an idiot, I've just been paying renewal fees. I'd be happy to lend the domain to this project.

Thanks
That's exactly what I was thinking, I used HM for a while and it was a great help. On the other hand I sorely missed a few things, in particular Linux support and full HORSE support. I will make everything configurable, initially through options in the profile (the .conf file), later with a graphical options dialogue. But I should get back onto it
Right now I'm renaming the database fields to fit my naming convention so that the HUD developers won't have to change later, next step is making the HUD cache positional.

That's a very good point. I don't suppose you or mr quicksilver would be interested in making a page for fpdb? For content you can use the stuff in the docs folder. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, just something to show the current status and have the documentation in a more user-friendly format.

I made an initial ebuild that you can get from the git tree or webgit.
Currently it just pulls in the dependencies and copies the fpdb python files but its a start. I will add a few more features by alpha2 (some point this weekend).

Thanks but I already registered fpdb.info some time ago when they had a special offer for $2/yr

Re: New free/open source poker tracking software: fpdb

Thats a good idea actually, making it skinnable. I've added it to the todo list, I'll make a start on it once some HUD works

On that note, I just pushed git35 to the main tree. There is no functional difference between it and the previous version but I have renamed all tables and many fields. (not really changed name, just the capitalisation). I do not expect to make any further changes to the existing tables and fields, although I will definitely add more fields.

Any volunteers for making a webpage?

Just pushed git38, the HUD cache table is now positional to facilitate positional HUDs.

I was thinking of sth with CSS with navigational links on the left, maybe a banner (I could put that into fpdb as well). Then the rest of the screen should be variable width to display the actual content.

Hey,

just to add, I'm good with graphics... new here so no proof as yet but if Fozzy or Quicksilver need any help with anything on that side, PM me. More than happy to chip in with this project, at the moment I'm too busy to get involved coding but I can help with any graphical works that need doing.

Let me know guys.
