Re: New iPhone app PokerCruncher (hand ranges odds calculator)

Thanks, DC. Guess I'll pick up an iTouch so I can play around with apps like this. What do you think about that, RJ?

Crane... Thanks man, same to you. But writing poker software, and playing poker well, totally different things. And I think the odds are a small part of the game, as the saying goes a necessary but not sufficient condition. But yeah maybe we'll meet at some table somewhere... (send me a private msg if you'd like). Best, -RJ

Theoretically, it should be easy for you to port this to OS X shouldn't it?

You realize there are no native OS X stove type applications.

Re: New iPhone app PokerCruncher (hand ranges odds calculator)

Yes shouldn't be too hard. The backend calculation engine would be a straight port. But the UI would need to be re-written especially the hand ranges UI. Both the layout / user input and also the names of UI controls classes/API's are different between iPhone and OSX Cocoa.

Thanks for suggestion, adding to my todo list, but I'm still adding features and will prob. wait til I reach some kind of stopping point or slowing down point on features before considering forking off an OSX version.

V.2.4 is a few weeks away. Thanks, -RJ

Re: New iPhone app PokerCruncher (hand ranges odds calculator)

This may have been asked before, but why is your range at 54% the same as PokerStoves at 48%? Am I doing something wrong? Two random numbers by the way. I just wanted to see how PokerStoves 48% range would compare to yours and found that at 54% they were exactly the same.

No, hasn't been asked, good question. The reason is that PokerCruncher's "select top x% of hands" slider's %age has a different/simpler meaning than PokerStove's slider. This is just a design simplification decision I made which I can correct in an update to get in sync with PokerStove.

PokerCruncher lists the 169 hands in order from strongest to weakest (in the same order as PokerStove, which is why you saw the 54 and 48 %age's match) and the slider picks the top x% of them in the linear order. PokerStove does the same but weights the hands according to the odds of getting them (6 combinations for a pair, 4 for a suited hand, 12 for an offsuit hand). So PokerCruncher's slider's %age setting doesn't match PokerStove's because of this equal weighting shortcut I took (which looks like I'll be fixing in an update).

But note that PokerCruncher shows the range's odds %age separately in the top right part of the hand range screen. Try this - start with a clean slate (no assigned cards anywhere), set the slider to 54%, tap "Add", and note that the %age at the top right says "48.1%", so under the covers the hands and odds are ok. This %age indicator is actually pretty smart in that it takes already assigned (i.e. non-live) cards into account. E.g. if another player has two specific aces e.g. AdAh, two aces are eaten up and the %age indicator takes this into account (not sure if PokerStove's slider %age does). So I had decided that since Cruncher shows both %age's, it's ok if the slider's %age "cheats" a little.

Good eye noticing this; I'll add this to the update list.

This won't make it in V.2.4 though. I'll be submitting the next update later this week, which means you guys will get it in about 2 weeks. In the next update you'll be able to tap the hand range grid to select cells, and also swipe horiz. and vert. and diagonally to multi-select cells. Since it's just a selection (not buttons) you don't have to nail it the first time and it looks to be pretty usable even with the small size cells. Thanks, -RJ

An update - I submitted V.2.4 today, so it will go live in about 7..10 days (wish it didn't take so long).

This next update *will* have the fix for the range slider's calibration - will calibrate according to the odds of the hands in the hand range instead of using a linear (odds unweighted) hand ordering. Thanks again to H.H. for writing about this.

V.2.4 will also have new Deal-To-Flop stats (combination draws, Pair&Draws), and tap and swipe hand range grid cells to select/multi-select them, and Equity will move to the top and be colored green/red/yellow. Most of these improvements have been driven by you guys, thanks for writing.

Re: New iPhone app PokerCruncher (hand ranges odds calculator)

Just bought this after looking for an app like this for a long time. Finally typed pokerstove into the app store search and this came up. After reading this thread and seeing such an active developer, decided to puchase.

Great job RJ999, and thanks for the updates!

Re: New iPhone app PokerCruncher (hand ranges odds calculator)

Super, thanks diseage!

Looking forward to V.2.4 going live (~ 5..7 days), esp. the tap/swipe range grid to select cells feature. I'm hoping most users will feel this helps with the usability (even with the small cells). Thanks to Cusem for this suggestion and others.

Also an update to Odds Teacher has been submitted. Next up, Odds Quizzer. Thanks, -RJ

Re. BB Curve, Storm, Android, etc. ports - Thanks for your votes guys; I've gotten emails too and this gives some idea of the demand. But I don't plan on starting on other devices for at least 1..2 more months. Reasons - lack of bandwidth ; ) (unless I pull more people in, it's just yours truly on development), and would be good to see how these other app stores play out compared to Apple's and which ones take the lead (incl. the Palm Pre's).

Also with BB's the Storm has a full touch screen but the Curve doesn't, so e.g. the hand range screens can't be as good on the Curve. And so you can't target all (or most) BB devices in one fell swoop as with iPhone's/iTouch's (have to go for the highest port bang for the buck). And I'm still busy with adding features to the iPhone version; adding backend calc engine features will help all future possible versions.

Sorry for all the excuses ; ) but the best I can say right now is that it's a month to month thing. Thanks, -RJ

RJ - awesome product, just downloaded it! well done dude.

not sure if this is the same issue you're fixing in the next update, but if somebody is raising 2.6% of hands, PokerStove tells me that's QQ+/AK. According to PokerCruncher that range works out to be just 1.96% of hands. My own calculations agree with PokerStove.

Is this being fixed?

Hey - thanks for getting the app and for the compliment!

Not sure if it really matters for the slider issue but when I enter 2.6% in PokerStove I get TT+/AKs. How did you get QQ+/AK, did you enter it manually? If you enter QQ+/AKo/AKs manually in PokerCruncher even now in V.2.3 you'll get 2.56% at the top right so it's in sync with PokerStove.

Unless, you don't start with a clean slate that is you have some specific cards assigned to players, which affects the %age indicator at the top right. E.g. if you've assigned specific cards AdAh to a player then any hand range that has hands with an ace will be affected downward on odds because two aces aren't live.

I'm guessing this (specific assigned cards) may be the issue because PokerCruncher's slider's %age rounds to the nearest full %age so you can't enter 2.6% accurately enough to see! Do let me know if we've gotten to the bottom of this.. Thanks, -RJ

Re: New iPhone app PokerCruncher (hand ranges odds calculator)

Hi everyone - V.2.4 of PokerCruncher went live last night with these features (most suggested by you guys in the last few pages):

1) Tap and swipe hand range grid cells to select/multi-select.
2) Move Equity to top and add colors (green, orange, yellow).
3) New Deal-To-Flop stats - combination draws and Pair&Draws.
4) Fix hand range slider %age calibration.
5) Fix a save/load hand range bug.

Because of 5), you'll need to clear and rebuild old hand ranges you may have in the app state (Menu -> ResetAll will do it), and also clear any hand ranges you may have saved in the hand range builder screen. Sorry about this hassle, my bad from V.2.2.

Re. 1) - Cusem had suggested this, e.g. tapping on the grid to get the general location right, then can use the 4 arrow buttons to pinpoint the location. It's a person to person thing but I'm wondering if tapping/swiping is accurate enough even by itself.

Also the OddsTeacher update went live a few days ago. Quizzer update will be submitted this week.

Hope you enjoy the new features (and I hope I didn't screw anything up ; ) ), do fire off questions/suggestions as always. Thx, -RJ

No plans for this yet (have gotten more than several requests for Omaha). Same boat as porting to other phones, these are month to month decisions (it's just me on development).

Updates to all 3 apps (4 if you include PokerCruncher Lite) have been submitted so I can at least start thinking about what to work on next or whether to start a new app, etc. Thx, -RJ

Many thanks for writing ScottieB43, I will keep up the work. It's great to hear that fellow poker players like the app. There will be another update at some point (features not set yet).

Re. OddsQuizzer - update has been submitted but is taking longer than usual to get approved.

Just fyi, all 3 recent app updates (to Cruncher, OddsQuizzer, and OddsTeacher) have been tested on the upcoming OS 3.0. Thanks for following this thread guys and responding. -RJ

Re: New iPhone app PokerCruncher (hand ranges odds calculator)

Everyone updated to iPhone OS 3.0 yet?..

I thought I had tested well enough on OS 3.0 but I'm seeing one bug in PokerCruncher - save/load app state. When you exit the app and launch it again, it doesn't start because the app state looks to be corrupt. But then it launches ok the next time but the app state has been wiped out. Working on a fix and an app update (under the latest SDK 3.0) ...

Calculation, hand ranges, etc. are running ok though so all in all this transition isn't a showstopper I think.

I actually see some improvements - tapping/swiping hand range grid cells is faster, and the hand range slider is faster and updates more frequently. Looks like OS 3.0 has some under the cover performance improvements in the updating of views, nice.

Re. OddsQuizzer - the update was sitting 2+ weeks for review. I decided to resubmit it in case it got lost in the queue somehow. With OS 3.0 coming out I bet there are a bunch of app updates being submitted.

I will be looking at all the PokerCruncher apps more closely in OS 3.0 and will submit updates in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for your patience guys. -RJ
