Smash Fewer Holes in Your Computer Desk: Coaching, Educational Product From SSNL/MSNL Crusher

Sup bros,

I'm a long-time shorthanded 1/2 and 2/4 NL player who no longer plays online (lol US gov't) but is looking to earn some money while pursuing non-poker options.

The above is verifiable by looking at my TableRatings profile, which shows similar numbers. I was in the top 50 biggest winners of all time on TR for both 1/2 and 2/4 on Full Tilt through the end of 2010, at which point I stopped putting in heavy volume.

1. $315 for a detailed written analysis of a 45-minute video w/ your commentary.

2. $105/hour for traditional sweating/talking/database review (Skype/TeamViewer).

I accept payments via PayPal, Moneybookers, wire transfer, Western Union, money order, cashier's check, personal check (must clear prior to services being provided), etc. I'll do my best to accommodate just about anything except a poker site transfer (lol US gov't). Please PM me to discuss.

I made seven videos for CardRunners back in 2008 (average video rating was 4.2/5). I've also coached sporadically in the past. Among other things, I am known for:

1. Writing lengthy poker theory articles (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ... a couple of these are in the stickied SSNL links thread and most of them have been posted and reposted in various Internet locations).

2. Using as hefty of a HUD as anyone and constantly considering statistics when forming reads and making decisions.

3. Starting as many tables as any other player at my stakes and taking 100% of comers heads up in hopes of keeping as many juicy games running as possible.

4. Keeping things light.

5. Not being a prick.

I'm comfortable coaching heads up, though you'd probably be better off with a heads up specialist if you're looking to focus solely on that form of poker. I'm willing to coach full ring and am confident in my ability in that arena, but again, if that's your game, it probably makes more sense to look into a full ring coach.

What I'm not offering:

1. World-class coaching that will send you to nosebleeds.

2. Coaching from someone who's playing the games right now. I care neither to battle the silly US gov't on this nor to move out of the country, so I haven't played online since April. FWIW, I have played 100+ hours of live poker since the ban. I understand that this will be a deal breaker for some. My hope is that the vast majority of prospective students will realize that A) my former win rate isn't achievable without the ability to adjust to all possible game conditions and B) I acknowledge the negative and have accounted for it in my coaching rate.

What I am offering:

1. Reasonably-priced coaching that will help you destroy the micros and win solidly through 1/2.

2. Coaching that stresses the thinking behind decisions over decisions themselves. "Give a man a fish..."

3. A unique coaching style. While I've received good feedback from the recipients of my "traditional" coaching (sweating), I encourage students to produce videos with commentary (via the use of CamStudio or some similar software) so that I can produce and email thorough minute-by-minute writeups. I prefer this arrangement for two reasons: A) It allows for flexibility with regard to time (on both my end and students' ends), which is always nice and is especially nice if there's a significant difference between the time zone of a student and his/her coach and B) It ensures that I'll be able to transfer 100% of my thoughts on tricky hands (when receiving "live" coaching, often students only receive their coaches' first two or three thoughts due to quickly-moving action/time constraints). While most coaches would probably be happy to provide written analysis on videos produced by students, I believe you'll get more detail in my writing and find it more pleasant to read. At the risk of coming off as arrogant, writing is natural for me and as a result, I submit that my preferred method of coaching ("$315 for a detailed written analysis of a 45-minute video w/ your commentary") stacks up well against any alternative for micro/small stakes NL players in terms of bang for the buck.

4. Constant availability. I'm looking to distinguish myself by supplementing paid lessons with free 24/7 poker discussion. I have a smartphone on which I frequently check email and texts. If you're a student of mine who has a hand or strategy question with which you're looking for help, email/text it to me and I'll respond as soon as reasonably possible. NLHE strategy discussion is fun for me.

5. If you live in or near New York City, I'm happy to set up some sort of in-person arrangement.

6. Trustworthiness. If you're considering hiring me as a coach, please ask around. I have a good reputation in this community for good reason.

I can supply references if requested, but it might make more sense to throw a quick post up in one of the strategy forums and ask long-time Full Tilt regulars about my game (and/or long-time strategy posters about my strategy posts). Of course, if you're a CardRunners member, you can also watch my videos there.

FWIW, I'm 25 years old. I graduated w/ a finance degree from Washington University in St. Louis a few years ago and am in the process of transitioning to a position in finance.

Thumbs up re: Smash Fewer Holes in Your Computer Desk: Coaching, Educational Product From SSNL/MSNL Crusher

Just finished my first video review session with Jon.
I really enjoy this way of coaching, since he takes his time to adress very specific issues regarding my thought process and playing style. Moreover, I have plenty of time to think about every hand afterwards. This definitely improves my game a lot. Also, his writing style is awesome, and it's very obvious that he knows what he's talking about.

Can't wait to do the next session!

Hey guys,

Quick update on my coaching.

I'm raising my rates to $80/hour (Skype) and $240/video review due to getting interest from more students than I have time to handle. Going to email 2+2 in a minute and ask them to edit my OP.

You'll notice that I'm changing the video review cost/Skype cost ratio from 2:1 to 3:1. I'll be honest about the reason: the video reviews are taking me longer than I expected they would. Each 45-minute video has been taking me six to seven hours to complete. At ~$40/hour, I believe I'm still offering good value on these. My writeups are very thorough. They've been averaging over 10 pages single-spaced and have been met with strong approval so far.

Those of you with whom I've been working and those of you who have contacted me prior to the time of this post are of course a different issue. I'll handle each of you separately. In general, I'll provide some sort of grace period, especially if you're willing to purchase some sort of package. I promise to remain flexible; I'm merely raising the baseline.

Please don't hesitate to contact me to inquire.

Thanks,
Jon

Short review of written analysis by tannenj

The video review (over 11 pages) gave a detailed analysis of each hand that I played (and even a few more that I decided to muck). It went beyond, describing what I should be doing in a specific situation and how to react in case if opponent does this, etc. It covers a great deal of topics that in some part is ‘an eye opener’ at my own game. If you ever wondered how you are playing during the game that is probably your best choice. You will not only find out what you should be doing in certain spots but you will learn why doing them is more profitable – which is far more important.
Apart the review itself Jon sent me notes regarding certain issues that I had.

I have no idea how long it took him to do all the work but I have a good feeling that it took him much longer than he is charging for.
The value for money is probably unbeatable.

I need to also add that Jon was very helpful delivering answers on all my questions regarding some of the hands and other poker related issues. My video review is followed by a number of coaching sessions and I am looking forward to our meetings.

Cheers!

Good coach, great value

Just logged my first coaching session with Jon. Time will tell how much impact his coaching has on my bottom line. But here are some initial impressions:

1) Jon has all the intangibles you want in a coach. He's knowledgable and seems genuinely interested in sharing that knowledge with his students. He works hard to help you succeed and his enthusiasm rubs off and makes you want to put in the time and effort to improve your game.

2) He is generous (to a fault) with his time. I understand that it's just one lesson (so far) but the guy has already put in at least 3 hours and charged me for only one. I almost (ALMOST) feel guilty. In fact, I feel so bad that after I win my first million, I may just pay him for those extra two hours.

3) Assuming that English is your native language, you will appreciate his exceptional writing ability. Over the phone (or Skype) he keeps the poker jargon to a minimum and explains difficult concepts in layman's terms.

Granted, none of these things matters as much as getting results. Who knows whether even Jon can turn a hopeless case like me into a winning player. But he's easy to work with and I feel like he's gradually remaking the way that I think about the game. Damn good value, if you ask me.

re: Smash Fewer Holes in Your Computer Desk: Coaching, Educational Product From SSNL/MSNL Crusher

I am pretty shocked/disappointed that this thread isn't getting more love.

Jon is a great coach and; while $80 may seem like a lot to a 25-100NL player, this rate is an absolute steal. I originally thought his rate was $160 and I was happy to pay that. I've paid as much as $350 an hour for coaching of similar caliber, so this is an absolute steal.

Jon had great insight into all of my questions and he was anything but nitty with his time. On several occasions we went a bit over the hour. During one particular session he offered me an additional 15 minutes(that really ended up being 25-30) of sweat because we hadn't run into many super interesting spots.

I can honestly say I have zero reservations about recommending Jon's coaching. It will be an absolute boon to any micro/SSNL player.

Wanted to make a quick post to say Jon is a great coach and a nice guy in general. He has helped me plug a few leaks and improved the way i think about poker. As others have stated, sessions often go over the allotted time and Jon is always willing to answer questions about hands.
After sessions we often ended up talking about life, politics, investing, just don't let him talk to you about MMA.
