Mental Game Coaching with Jared Tendler (DTB Coach)

As the games continue to become more competitive, more players are realizing how much value there is by working on their mental game. Just think about how much issues like tilt, laziness, booking wins too early, choking under pressure, or struggling with variance cost you. These and other issues add up, and they have a direct impact on your winrate. Depending on the stakes you play, or the severity of your issues, my coaching will quickly pay for itself.

Before I became a mental game coach for poker players, from 2005-07, I was a coach for over 300 golfers, a few who played on the PGA and LPGA Tours. I was about to start playing a full season of professional golf, when I was introduced to the poker world in 2007 by Dusty “leatherass” Schmidt. Since then, I’ve coached over 170 players from around the world, ranging from nosebleeds down to low stakes. I don’t divulge my client list, but below you can read some comments from some of them who chose to give testimonials.

I’m also a featured coach for DragtheBar, and write monthly instructional columns for WPT Magazine and PokerPro Europe. Prior to becoming a mental game coach, I earned a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Northeastern University, and fulfilled the requisite 3,200 hours of supervised practice to become licensed as mental health counselor.

Coaching Overview

A growing source of information on the mental game is emerging in poker. The problem is that much of it only scratches the surface of the most common issues many of you face. Quality matters a lot, just as it does in learning the technical aspects of the game. Quality to me, means giving you what you need, not saying what you want to hear. That means, digging deeper into the issue to understand the real cause. Such things as hating mistakes, perfectionism, fantasizing, , believing you deserve to win, wanting to win every session, believing you are cursed, are a few examples the real problems that have to be fixed.

Identifying the cause of your mental game problems is the first step, and to make that happen quickly, clients first complete this questionnaire. Then, I provide a straightforward, step-by-step strategy to fixing your mental game problems. Part of that includes educating you on some key theories and basic brain functioning. Once you know some principles of how the mind works, improving your mental game is a lot simpler. The strategy also evolves the better we both understand the issues. The quality of a strategy can only be as strong as the quality of your understanding of the problem.

There are two primary goals of my coaching. First the obvious: prevent, manage, or eliminate entirely the mental game issues preventing you from playing your best. This is a list of the most common ones I help players improve:
  • Tilt (In my program Tilt is defined as bad play caused only by anger.)
  • Handling variance – running bad/well
  • Fear (Ex. moving up in stakes, failure, and general nerves in big pots.)
  • Emotional control
  • Low confidence and overconfidence (winner's tilt)
  • Procrastination
  • Laziness – not getting in enough hours.
  • Discipline
  • Poker & life balance

Once these, or other issues, are under control, the second goal is help you to actually improve the quality of your mental best – the zone. Yes, the quality of your absolute best mentally can improve just as you’re able to improve your A-game technically. Being able to consistently be at your best, and have your best become better, requires that you can learn efficiently. This is the other side of my expertise. The clients who have advanced this far, gain an advantage by being able to learn a new line or play and unlearn old habits faster. Those methods also help them to eliminate future mental game problems quickly as well as increase volume (tables/hours).

Note: Sessions are most often done on skype so they can be recorded, and reviewed by you as often as you want. Also, I’m not watching you play. We’re talking the whole time. Players sometimes wonder what the hell we can talk about for an hour. These issues are more complex than you realize and that’s a big reason why you haven’t fixed them on your own.

Brief quotes about my coaching:

“He has been such an enormous help to me. I now play virtually tilt-free and bring my A-game nearly every time I play.” — Dusty “Leatherass” Schmidt, PokerStars Team Online Pro

“Jared Tendler is a pioneer of the poker mental game. No one else even compares to his fact-based, scientific approach that is backed up by years of study in modern psychology.” — Hunter Bick, Professional poker player, DragTheBar CEO

“He teaches you things you simply can’t learn by playing.” — Ben “NeverScaredB” Wilinofsky; Winner of 2011 EPT Berlin

“Jared doesn’t spout feel-good mumbo-jumbo; this isn’t patronizing psychobabble. Instead, he peels back your poker-playing layers to identify and address your specific issues.” —Jeremiah Smith, Host of the Cash Plays podcast on Cardrunners

“I think I’ve been one of the most successful online players over the past five years, and there’s been no greater positive influence on my game than Jared and nothing else even comes close.” — Niman “Samoleus” Kenkre, BlueFire Poker Coach

“Until Jared, the only advice I had heard about tilt, even from respected coaches, was ‘don’t do it.’ Now I’m winning almost 12bb/100 playing stakes as high as $50/$100 Heads Up NL.” — Liz “RikJamesB1atch” Herrera

“Jared invented the field as far as I’m concerned.” — Jesse May, Host of PartyPoker's The Poker Show

“I can honestly say that working with Jared is one of the best invest¬ments I’ve ever made.” — Matt “mbolt1” Bolt, DragTheBar Coach

“Jared is a genius when it comes to helping you both recognize and sys¬tematically rid yourself of the issues that are getting in the way of reaching your potential. I don’t know where I would be today without him.” — Danny Steinberg, High Stakes Professional

“I’ve met quite a few people in this field and no one has had the effect that Jared did.” — Sean Gibson, Poker News Daily

“Jared’s approach works very well because he doesn’t put a patch on the problem and instead changes the way you think, not just about poker but life in general.” — Pascal “Stake Monster” Tremblay, Cardrunners Coach

“Jared is a smart, hard-working, funny guy who is extremely good at his job. He manages to be both personal and professional, which is a hard thing to do. If you have tilt issues that cost you money, then you’re down¬right silly not to work with him.” — Paul “GiantBuddha” Hoppe, DragTheBar Coach

“I worked with Jared for three months and my progress was nothing short of phenomenal.” — Alan “Dixon” Jackson, BlueFire Poker Coach

An invaluable addition to any serious poker player's game IMO. Unless the cost represents a big portion of someone's bankroll there's no reason to not go for the whole package. Speaking from experience, the long-term EV of getting it is way above the initial cost. We spend so much time on our poker games but not nearly enough on what will determine our success more than anything else: our mind.

For those interested in a more affordable option to my coaching, I have a new book out called, The Mental Game of Poker (more details in this thread). It's packed with a ton of great advice about Tilt, Fear, Motivation and Confidence that I've used with players over the last 4 years.

Perfect for anyone serious about learning an aspect of the game that has becoming more and more important. It's getting solid reviews from the media and from players.

Hey Jared,

I just signed up for your 90 minute seminar. I was wondering if there is any software I need to download or anything I can do to prepare for the seminar?

Thanks,
Brian Arbaugh

Hi Brian,

Great to hear you'll be there for the seminar. You don't need to download any software. DailyVariance will send you a link before the seminar starts that you can click to join.

From an instructional side, the best thing you can do to prepare is understand your pattern of tilt. What are the things or situations that cause you tilt? How do you react when you're on tilt? What do you say to yourself, outloud, or to others? What tactical mistakes do you make? What makes it worse/better?

Have details about your tilt pattern will help immensely when identifying the underlying cause of your tilt, and in developing a clear strategy to fix it.

The other thing you can do, is to write out specific questions?

See you Sunday!
Jared

Re: Mental Game Coaching with Jared Tendler (DTB Coach)

Just wanted to let everyone know that I have new radio show on QuadJacks, appropriately called, The Mental Game. It airs live on Wednesdays at 5pm Eastern and I accept call-ins to answer questions live on the air. If you have questions about the book, or about any aspect of your mental game, during the show you can call: (702) 997-2501 or on skype: qjcalls.

I've had some great guests on so far, including: Lex Velhuis, Tommy Angelo, Dusty "Leatherass" Schmidt, and Aaron "WiltOnTilt" Wilt. Plus, each month I bring on a listener to do a live-on-air session. Listen to the show for details on how you could be on the show.

The 10 archived shows can be found here: http://www.quadjacks.net/category/po...thementalgame/

It was $450 for the whole month, but I'm not offering that option anymore.

The custom group still available and actually cheaper. With that option, if you find 3 other people and, for example, want to do four - 75min sessions, each of you would pay a total of $400. Or have a group of 5 and you each pay a total of $320.

More details in my previous post, here's the total cost/group for each option:

Hey. I beat 2/5 NLHM for a pretty good hourly. Looking to improve my game and move up to 5/10 in 6-8 months. I'm interesting in a session, but want to know if we can have a short 10-15 minute session before I commit. Thanks.
