As the games continue to become more competitive, more players are realizing how much value there is by working on their mental game. Just think about how much issues like tilt, laziness, booking wins too early, choking under pressure, or struggling with variance cost you. These and other issues add up, and they have a direct impact on your winrate. Depending on the stakes you play, or the severity of your issues, my coaching will quickly pay for itself.
Before I became a mental game coach for poker players, from 2005-07, I was a coach for over 300 golfers, a few who played on the PGA and LPGA Tours. I was about to start playing a full season of professional golf, when I was introduced to the poker world in 2007 by Dusty “leatherass” Schmidt. Since then, I’ve coached over 170 players from around the world, ranging from nosebleeds down to low stakes. I don’t divulge my client list, but below you can read some comments from some of them who chose to give testimonials.
I’m also a featured coach for DragtheBar, and write monthly instructional columns for WPT Magazine and PokerPro Europe. Prior to becoming a mental game coach, I earned a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Northeastern University, and fulfilled the requisite 3,200 hours of supervised practice to become licensed as mental health counselor.
Coaching Overview
A growing source of information on the mental game is emerging in poker. The problem is that much of it only scratches the surface of the most common issues many of you face. Quality matters a lot, just as it does in learning the technical aspects of the game. Quality to me, means giving you what you need, not saying what you want to hear. That means, digging deeper into the issue to understand the real cause. Such things as hating mistakes, perfectionism, fantasizing, , believing you deserve to win, wanting to win every session, believing you are cursed, are a few examples the real problems that have to be fixed.
Identifying the cause of your mental game problems is the first step, and to make that happen quickly, clients first complete
this questionnaire. Then, I provide a straightforward, step-by-step strategy to fixing your mental game problems. Part of that includes educating you on some key theories and basic brain functioning. Once you know some principles of how the mind works, improving your mental game is a lot simpler. The strategy also evolves the better we both understand the issues. The quality of a strategy can only be as strong as the quality of your understanding of the problem.
There are two primary goals of my coaching. First the obvious: prevent, manage, or eliminate entirely the mental game issues preventing you from playing your best. This is a list of the most common ones I help players improve:
- Tilt (In my program Tilt is defined as bad play caused only by anger.)
- Handling variance – running bad/well
- Fear (Ex. moving up in stakes, failure, and general nerves in big pots.)
- Emotional control
- Low confidence and overconfidence (winner's tilt)
- Procrastination
- Laziness – not getting in enough hours.
- Discipline
- Poker & life balance
Once these, or other issues, are under control, the second goal is help you to actually improve the quality of your mental best – the zone. Yes, the quality of your absolute best mentally can improve just as you’re able to improve your A-game technically. Being able to consistently be at your best, and have your best become better, requires that you can learn efficiently. This is the other side of my expertise. The clients who have advanced this far, gain an advantage by being able to learn a new line or play and unlearn old habits faster. Those methods also help them to eliminate future mental game problems quickly as well as increase volume (tables/hours).
Note: Sessions are most often done on skype so they can be recorded, and reviewed by you as often as you want. Also, I’m not watching you play. We’re talking the whole time. Players sometimes wonder what the hell we can talk about for an hour. These issues are more complex than you realize and that’s a big reason why you haven’t fixed them on your own.
