Pool for money Pool for money

Hi. Do some pool players make their $$ the old fashion way, i.e. through wagering on side/private games in pool halls or bars? I know there is a professional league but payouts aren't high like in other sports, so I imagine there are some ballers out there wagering big stakes on private games, just like how Phil Ivey, and some other famous poker pros make huge bets when they play golf.

Also do you know where the 'action' is in the US? I'm thinking there might be some good money games in Vegas, for obvious reasons, but I don't know.

All I know is I like pool a hell of a lot more than poker, lol.

Thanks

Heres some footage of Viffer playing Alex Pagulayan for 40k. Viffer is known as Dippy Dave in the pool scene.

There used to be late action in a joint in Chelsea area of Manhattan (lower west side) Ginky used to uh, consort there.
Kid Chocolate should know plenty of places.

I was just in the US talking with several pros and from what I understand the majority of the action is still in the South, specifically Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama.

Viffer created a lot of action in the pool world. Have to love a guy who walks into a pool room filled with champions and says, "I hear in the game if you win $50,000 you're famous. Well, I'm here to make somebody famous!" and then throw a $50,000 brick of hundreds down on the table. So awesome!

LOL, Lyke A Bauce.

Viffer knows how to handle the champs. He always tends to find action games where he gets ridiculous weight in his advantage.

Heres is some Viffer playing One-hole maestro, Scott Frost (arguably one of the best at the game in the world).

Notice Viffer putting on a front? Ive never seen him act that way before, Its likely the character/schtick he puts on when he finds action or enters a pool hall.

Wat?

There is little money in pool these days (Viffer being an exception). Most of the money in pool is made from drug sales...and I hate to say that. I went and played in my towns big tourney at Diamond's Billiards in Cape Coral. Entry is $50. So it's pretty serious. I get in their and Cory Duell is there, several other big names too. Men's pool has gone to hell. Women's pool is going strong. The male side of pool is too shady.

Hey guys. If there is Alot of action there in Vegas.when I'm in town I'm up for a battle of individual games.best of 11 pool and snooker heads up nlh and a round of golf. If it's tied chess.. If the person can't play chess. 4 rounds of boxing. Il put up 20k whoever wants a challenge let me know here.if a game gets set up and people wanna buy a piece that would also be fun. I can hold my own in these games wanna play mostly because it would be Alot of fun and I'm a degen hehe. Ps don't watch much pool but viff is getting schooled in that video..the guy is clearly a class player but a crap hustler

Come to mobile, alabama. I know a 54 year old man who will play you some nine ball or one pocket, play head up nlh, and also go a few rounds with you. You can bet whatever you want.

Honestly, it is brutal to make it playing pool these days. If you are good, you are already known when you walk in the door. Everyones nuts draw up when a know player walks in and even if he offers to give up the world, he can hardly get a game.

Most of the players that are good and know how to get the cash still struggle because you gotta stay on the move. Once you bust a few pool halls in one town, you gotta move on. Word moves quick. So you are always on the road and spending money on food, hotels, gas. (If you can afford such luxuries)

As someone else mentioned, you arent going to find a "pool player" backing himself for a ton of money. Ya, Dippy dave does, but he isnt a pool player. If you find a game where there are two guys betting high claiming its their own money, they're prolly doing business. If you are smart, you wont bet on other peoples matches or you'll be broke quick.

To make it in pool, if you truly want a grind, you must have discipline. You have to live in a big city where you can go to different places day to day and hustle. Make a couple of hundred, dont drink, dont play tough games where you are gambling and play on your own money. If you are really good, you can chase the big fish, but when you start busting them, your creating a name for yourself, thus destroying your earnings.

P.S. if you dont know where the action is, you are the action.
09-08-2012 , 01:43 AM
sounds about accurate. it is a brutal living from what i understand. keep on grinding.
09-08-2012 , 12:59 PM
JMitchell, It's worse than brutal. Little action on east coast and tri-state area. Nothing close to where you can make a living.

Life is very hard at the cash tables in pool for people who tell the world how good they are and practice to a high level in front of everyone.

Probably one of the most obvious truths of the game, but we all know people who cant resist show boating!

If poker players start backing shooters, the games will get super juicy and the stakes will get higher. Did anybody know that Oscar Dominguez is backed by Nick Shulman. There were rumors during the Canadian Championships that Oscar and some player to be named later, were working on a race for 100K. I havent heard anything since though. If I do, Ill surely post it in this forum.

They played once in NYC Oscar lost 50K, I dont think they played again. I talked to Oscar about it, he wanted to play in LA a 2nd time, it didnt go off. I think in LA with home court advantage he would have a good shot to win. However since its been so long I think it will never happen.

Pool will never have big action to speak of again, to much business(dumping). Short sighted people on short $$$=failure.
