Re: ***Official BBV/League/Equipment/LC/Anything thread ***
Thanks for making this. I lurk the forum pretty often but am unfamiliar with the non 8/9 ball games. Other times I'll have questions or comments that aren't worth starting a thread.
But the real reason was to post a weak brag, ldo.
Tonight was 2nd week of divisional playoffs for our 8-ball league. Top league in town, about 150 players, teams of 6. Our team is among the bottom dwellers, we're 4-18 but on a 2 match heater. Tonight we play the A team from our bar, they've been playing together for years and never lost to the B squad. Their record is 15-7, atop the 2nd tier division.
We played the season as a mixture of 25-50% shooters. Recently we lost our 2 worst shooters to cancer remission and jail time. My bro finally turned of age so we scooped him up (60%+) and got another 40% guy who's really competitive but rarely plays.
As usual we start off slow, going down 1-5 to end the first round. Luckily we got some favorable matchups 2nd round and tied it up 6-6. In the final round we're up 8-7 and I draw their best player playing for the tie at worst. I positionally f'ed myself with 1 ball remaining and my only option was a side rail kick, cutting the 5 ball about 30* into the side pocket. I struck it just right with top-left and it sunk, then got out on the 8 with a risky corner cut. My bro sealed the deal next game running out in two turns.
1-5
5-1
5-1
Pretty fun night, feels good seeing our team progress and now we're just 3 games back from the division leader. I think we can run the slate next 6 weeks with our new teammates and only playing 3rd tier teams.

What site allows you to diagram the table setup like I see in the PotW's?
Should you practice on same size table you competitively play on? Obv not going to practice on a bar box if playing for $ on 9-footer but what about vice versa?
More US 8/9 ball in the PotW plz! Although I'm going to read up on the other cue sports.

Re: ***Official BBV/League/Equipment/LC/Anything thread ***
www.pool.bz is the one currently being used (it's under the tools tab). I started off with a template but the excellent 9ball used that and it's a much better tool over all.
Yeah generally you should practice on the same style of table you play on, although being able to quickly master new tables is a crucial skill. The key thing is to practice - as long as you are not on some absolute monster of a table all practice helps.
Will try and get some more US 9/8ball problems up - I try and give a broad variety to both illustrate tactics from beginner to pro and certain tricks of the trade that players might not know about. It's a hardish one to balance but hopefully with dinopoker and 9ball also posting the odd problem we can get a big library covering everything over time.

Was playing one pocket yesterday with some of the worst house cues I think I have ever played with. Basically lost two whole games and missed two 8 runs due to miss cues and was so tilted I nearly went to the bar and offered to re-tip all the cues. Siiiiigh.

Played an apa league game last night. I just started and lost my first match so I went from a 4 to a 3. I was playing a 2 so he needed to win 2 games and I needed 3 to win the match. I won the lag and had a break and run on the first game. Second game he scratched on the 8 putting me up 2 games to 0. He won the third and my dumbass missed a straight shot at the 8 in the 4th game (the nerves were building up). He pulled some bankshot out of his ass for the win.
Our team still won the match though 3-2.

Reading the PotW's makes me think we need a standardized syntax for table geography. Something like this:
Other ideas welcome, I just gave this a couple minutes thought.

Sounds to me you're lucky he won because 3s shouldn't be running tables (I play as a 5 in APA). I very seldom do so but it's more of because of my style of play on Wednesday's (half lit ) that keeps me from shooting as accurately as I should. But it sounds like you started off that match with very few innings and since your first match was as an unranked 4 your rating could easily shoot up to a 5 or 6 in one week!

Yeah, I don't quite know the "lingo" within the forums for describing where the ball is going. Your diagram is definitely a good way to go!

Re: ***Official BBV/League/Equipment/LC/Anything thread ***
Whoohoo, pool BBV.
1. Brag: Behind the back jumpshot with cue ball frozen on the rail, stripe ball in the way, and my 8 ball near the corner pocket. Sank the 8.
Beat: Scoop shot, cannot execute proper jumpshot.
Variance: Friends think it was luck. Probably true
2. Beat: Gave friend 10-3 odds at 9 ball. Friend wins first 3 games by me choking, sinking 9 on the break (his second time ever breaking a 9 ball rack), and me choking the 9.
Brag: Win 11 racks of 9 ball in a row and 1 rack of 8 ball for 10-4 odds.
Variance: +7 on pool for the day. Friend not exactly a good pool player.
3. Brag: Break 8 ball and run 6 balls.
Beat:Miss cut shot on last solid, 8 ball right over corner pocket, 2 balls away from first ever break and run (I'm a rec player, it's a big deal for me dammit!)
Variance: Won frame anyways.
4. Brag: Spent night playing pool for $1.50 on bar coin-op table after beating winner and staying winner for a long long time.
Beat: None really. If I was nit picky, I'd say I wish we were playing 9 ball.
Variance: Got drunk, had fun.

Re: ***Official BBV/League/Equipment/LC/Anything thread ***
Going for 5 in a row tonight in league. We play our neighboring bar who beat us in a tiebreaker earlier in the season when I missed a relatively easy shot on the 8-ball. Got so pissed I just threw the 8-ball in the pocket instead of making him shoot. :-\

Big leak. Never, ever concede.
I am forever astonished by the mistakes people make on even the simplest shots.

biggest head game ever, if someone concedes a frame just walk up to the table and miss the shot after they have conceded. it will eat at them for the next couple of frames....

Re: ***Official BBV/League/Equipment/LC/Anything thread ***
Anyone have pool books or equipment they'd like to sell? Who are the best pool authors?
13-5 in our redemption match last night, five in a row feels great.

Also, on sportsmanship principle, it's not over until it's over. You do the sport, your own person, and your opponent disservice by not finishing the match. My basketball coach in high school always taught us to fight until the very end and sometimes miracles do happen like coming back from a 20 point deficit at half time against the host school who the refs were heavily biased against us. It was also semi finals of provincial championships. (One of their guys full on football tackled my teammate 5 seconds after the whistle was blown. No foul given. Just one of the many incidences of non heterosexual reffing that game)
Anyway, reason I opened this thread. Made a very sick shot today. Playing some 8 ball against a fellow student in the student lounge. He's a very good potter but neither of us are able of running out racks (in my case, yet). I was on the 8, called bottom corner pocket, 8 ball banked off the jaws twice and stopped about 6 inches away from the pocket frozen on the rail. He has 2 balls left. Sank one, missed a difficult cut and left the cue ball almost parallel to the 8 ball on the opposite end of the table. I called near corner pocket, hit the 8 ball on the right half pretty hard, banked right into my left hand corner pocket. Excrement was comparable to currency.
