Line of aim and how to get down on it properly.

Hey i been shooting pool 20 years as a hobby.

I"m pretty good an almost an A player.

I dont see much literature about how to get on line correctly.

Here's how i do it.. When standing imagine line..
Then lean into the line..

Once down NEVER MOVE LINE EVEN IF LOOKS OFF.. AS U CAN'T VISUALIZE CORRECTLY ONCE DOWN ON THE AIM ANYWAYS IS VERY IMPORTANT.

Once down just take a few strokes to get loose.. then slight pause.. 1 second or two... then hit the ball.

any other advice on this ?

when standing looking for line might help to tilt head forward?
Also i kind of line up my foot with the shot and use back part of my foot usually to on line of aim then just trust my lineup.

Also i notice that my body unconciously gets into line of aim when i get before a shot.. sometimes I feel that i should trust my unconcious and get down on shot immediately so.

Yep, that's pretty similar to what I do. I use the hybrid snooker stance where both my feet are parallel and pointing towards wherever I'm shooting. My right leg (I'm right handed) is right on my shooting line and I'd describe it as aiming with your body when you're standing , not with your eyes when you crouch down.

As for advice, I don't have any direct ones on how to aim while standing, you've described it pretty well. But one thing is never be afraid to stand back up to re-evaluate if the shot feels off. What you see in the crouch may not be what you're going to get but if our stance doesn't feel right or if it truly looks off, stand back up and aim again.

Sometimes when I get down i'm thinking this isn't correct and I am trying to adjust while down on the table, normally results in me missing the ball, IMO you should always stand back up and start again.

Was just what u was about to say! On my opinion you should always reset stance rather than try to adjust it while down at the table.

always stand up again if it doesnt feel right ^^

best thing to do is have a sort of preshot ritual, that u follow everytime before a shot
like stand up from ur chair, put chalk think and then set up feet etc

Re: Line of aim and how to get down on it properly.

Im not that good in playing billiards but i do reach the last 16 in local tournaments.

Not going to touch the proper posture for billiard but here are some tips that i hope will help you.

Most casual players make their mistakes unknowingly.

This is what most of them do.

Look= think = go in shooting position = aim = shoot

this is wrong.

The right way is.

Look = think = aim = go in shooting position= shoot

In shooting position you cannot have an accurate calculation of the distance and in that view , your shot feels off... Always aim in a birds eye view.

In the shooting position the only adjustment your going to do is where to hit the white ball( i mean, do you want it to follow thru, go back, stop, curve, etc.), how strong your going to hit.

Hope it helps

changing where you hit the cue ball will change the target on the object ball no?

as long as you dont modify your shots too much (like add a big curve in your shot or make it jump) it wont effect your aim that much.

I think this is highly personal. your "shot feelin off" in shooting position and depending on your original estimation from birdsview doesnt seem recommendable.

it shouldnt feel off at all. you should be able to get down on a shot intentionally completely wrong and maneuver yourself with a couple shuffles in correct alignment. Im not saying thats recommendable just that its not difficult..just focus on objectball and the pocket in your peripheral to see the correct line. I see the exact line the best in shooting position. its like a confirmation that how I estimated the shot was correct

also not to uncommon to see players shuffle a bit in shooting position. I watched a bit of o'sullivan to verify. you would think he gets in shooting position rocksolid everytime...but you can see him shuffling his feet a bit also sometimes. He recognises his estimation from birdseyeview wasnt entirely correct and makes some minor adjustement while on the shot

Re: Line of aim and how to get down on it properly.

how I approach a shot....

before aligning and stepping in to the shot I focus on the pocket and have the ball I wanna pot in my peripheral. step in, somewhere in the stepping in fase I switch to focussing on the objectball and the pocket in peripheral. theres some feel involved and not really that systematic "do this, and then at that moment do that" sorta thing..

might be the goose that lays the golden eggs or it might be highly personal aswell.

This is so right. It is impossible to gauge distances when you are down ready to shoot.

Object ball is far and cue ball is near. So, your eyes keep focusing in and out.

In a bird's eye view, everything is relative far away. You can also see the distances between the object ball and the pocket, and also the object ball from the cue ball. Of course the best position is on the ceiling - cue stick position, cue ball, object ball and pocket. That being not possible, we go for the second best and that is standing at the butt of the cue stick with the cue tip resting directly behind the cue ball.

Re: Line of aim and how to get down on it properly.

For me, the best aiming system is this. This is how I get the shot line and it works for me everytime.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlfJmIeqG4o

What I do different is, I will stand directly behind the object ball to pocket line and see the contact point (even in the case of the video even if it is miniscule). Then I move to behind the cue ball (as in the video, I will step to the left. Automatically my body becomes aware of the needed angle regardless of thin cut or thick cut. My eyes never left the contact point. The rest, I do exactly like the video and I pot the balls almost every single time.
