Is this a foul? 8-ball pool

I was playing 8-ball with a ball in hand rule in Laos when I was drunk in a late night bar. The guy I was playing was of a decent standard and a regular in the joint. I'm not sure if he was angling me about this as it was winner stays on with a massive waiting list at the time.

I was making a nice break then lost position and had to play a containing safety. I was stretching and lost my balance as I was about to take my shot and my cue went through but I completely missed the white ball. So I quickly took my shot after and the guy came up and picked up the white saying I 'played a foul shot' because I missed the white the first time.

He said I played a foul because I attempted to strike the cue ball but missed. I objected saying I didn't strike the cue ball so still had my turn and it was no foul. But he was right in a way I 100% tried on the first go to hit the white but missed.

Sorry if this is not clear but I can't find any rule clarification for this on the net. Also what if this happened in snooker is it the same ruling? Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing you your playing at the Bor Pen Nyang? Here's a good rule: Don't.

BCA rules are very clear on this. It is absolutely not a foul in any cue sport.

Not a foul in APA rules either.

Cheers for the replies. We actually scratched the game and I played on the other table because I argued successfully it wasn't a foul. But sometimes you have that nagging voice in the back of your head thinking it might be an obscure rule.

Anyway here's a pic of the angler

Graham from the midlands in the UK. He has been teaching English in Laos for 5 years living on about $600 a month. He speaks little to no thai or Lao and also tried to steal my beer when I wasn't looking I suppose I should feel sorry for him really.

In many instances, the different bars/pubs have their house rules. If there isn't, then revert to BCA rules.
