English Billiards Question

OK, this has been bugging me forever and google has turned up no answers. Why in English Billiards is it considered bad etiquette to pot your opponent's cue ball?

It's not really bad etiquette what it does is limit your scoring opportunities. With your opponents ball off the table you only have the red to work with.

It is also a safety shot if there is nothing else on. You can pot the white then double baulk your opponent thus making it very difficult for them to score.

My billiards experience is very limited, 2 league games and around 15 practice games, but I must say even though I don't consider it bad etiquette, whenever I've potted the opponents cue ball, I've heard a few groans around the room. Being 21, playing against opponents mostly aged 60 and above, I think maybe the older generation consider it "the wrong way to play" much like playing deliberate fouls in 8 ball pool.

ive never played but comparing it to playing a deliberate foul makes it sound disgusting.
