What vibe makes you think that? What do you make of him saying "I didn't pay all this money because I want it easy" to Dolores near the start and then "goddamn, feels good to be back" after shooting james marsden?

1). Don't Smoke. Please, don't smoke

3) if you die watching The Matrix, you die. Same thing in Westworld

The vibe I got from Ed Harris was that he's playing a game opposite Anthony Hopkins and stealing the brain was industrial espionage. That doesn't really make sense in terms of how he could be allowed to leave with it or how they wouldn't notice it missing, but nothing else really makes sense either. He's almost definitely a guest though. They can see the town from the office so he's not hiding from them.

Loved the first episode, in fact considering how picky I am about my TV/movies I can't remember the last time I watched a pilot and thought it was that good from start to finish.

Ed Harris pretty confusing right now, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that they will clear things up in a way that makes sense.

I assume Anthony Hopkins won't be around for long. Seems like too big a name to spend multiple seasons on something like this. Also makes sense for him to be an early casualty in the android uprising.

Watched again and picked up a few things:

- The sheriff has his meltdown on the trail when a fly lands on his face. One eye continues to follow the fly as he's having his seizure. Seems like he probably thought to swat the fly and that was what caused his meltdown. Then when they are examining him in the office and they say "he literally couldn't hurt a fly", he spasms.

- When James Marsden wakes up on the train riding in at the very end, he has his hand under his coat where he was shot in the chest. He's having a memory of it.

- Ed Harris says "damn it's good to be back" at some point. Maybe he was a host who escaped/was discarded and is now returning as a guest. Actually, I bet he used to work there. Hmmm, need to see the movie again.

i vote for policy to be movie plot lines in spoilers. i know it's a 40 year old movie or whatever, but i don't remember it, and this story is likely to be similar

and jesus, there was some damn good acting in that episode

Because of this show, I watched the movie yesterday. Movie spoiler:

Spoiler:
The movie is 1:28 long. The first hour is a Disneyland commercial. The last 28 minutes are a stretched out 10 minute chase scene. It was still kind of fun to watch.

i thought this was an allusion to the "real demented ****" that the group of young guy guests were talking about that the main host guy supposedly lead one of them out to last time

A couple more thoughts:

- The theme song that starts the loop is a loop itself. Just one short series of notes played over and over. This isn't surprising but still cool when you think about it.

- The hosts must get out of Westworld and take the story to the real world (or to whatever world Harris is building). It's nearly impossible to imagine a scenario where the rebellion can continue, season after season, for as long as HBO plans to run the show, in the confines of the park. And just repeating one rebellion after another, with a wipe each season would get boring you'd think.

A couple of my favorite moments:
Rye whisky. What about it? Well it ain't doing any good sitting in that bottle.
The scene where Jeffrey Wright notices the woman's eyebrow when she's angry. That little interaction is fascinating. You really get insight into how his character is obsessed with replicating human behavior.

The second episode of the sci-fi breakout series has been released early by HBO. You can watch Westworld Ep. 2 right now on HBO Now, HBO Go and HBO On Demand.

I'm typically picky and nitty about shows like this attempting complex plots - and have not been that engaged start to finish by a pilot since Lost. "Coolness" potential of Ed Harris' character is off the charts. Don't even mind that the fly thing wasn't particularly subtle.

Also +1 great acting/music/cinematography.

Funny that Ed Harris played the architect of a controlled environment in the Truman Show. I could buy the theory that he was an ex-worker or architect here also, returning as a guest for some purpose. The scalp thing might be an Easter egg he left himself long ago.

A plot theory that popped into my head based on something Anthony Hopkins said

Spoiler:

He talks about how humans are off the evolutionary leash, how we'll never improve because natural selection no longer applies. Maybe he is a real crazy and is planning on his androids being the next evolutionary step "forward"

There is no real story to the movie other than there is a holiday resort that uses robots to replicate historical periods. The 2 main characters arrive, have a little fun then the robots start to malfunction and no longer obey their programming.

Nothing gets explained why it happened or who made it happen, there is no twists or revelations or villains (other than the bad robots) which I think the TV show is going to focus on so I don't think you need to worry about someone who's seen the movie spoiling anything.

The movie was Jurassic Park with robots. Which is interesting considering they are both by Crichton.
