YES. This is the episode that was written in the aftermath of 9/11 and aired special. It was great.

Responding to critics who thought the hastily-assembled special edition of "The West Wing" that aired a matter of weeks after Sept. 11, Sorkin said he didn't think the show was very good either. But he said that's beside the point.

"Some sort of respect had to be paid to the event that just happened," he said. "We couldn't just do a regular 'West Wing.' I don't think that it was a good episode of 'The West Wing.' I don't think it was an episode of 'The West Wing.' I don't even know if it was good television. It was well intended it was never meant to teach anything, to be preachy."

Was trying to recall which episode this was, ty ... also just sought out and watched the episode where Josh interviews Matthew Perry for a job ... I've had Perry's response in my head all week ... his delivery is awesome

JOSH: Right. Why do you want to work here? Why not the private sector?
JOE: I'm on my way to New York.
JOSH: You have something lined up?
JOE: A final interview with Debevoise and Plimpton.
JOSH: That's my father's firm. He was a partner there.
JOE: I know!

I've read that years later Sorkin would sometimes introduce himself as Aaron 'I shouldn't have written Isaac and Ishmael" Sorkin, no joke. I like the ep but it was a little oversimplified, and diehards absolutely hated the way Leo was portrayed. Sorkin was right though, they had to do something and there wasn't much time to do it.

Watching this for the first time so obviously grunching. I am still in season one, but the final part of episode 10, the homeless guys funeral juxtaposed with the boys choir singing in front of the oval office, was just awesome. There were so many details I loved (Toby Ziegler's guilt and insecurity expressed via body-language and facial expressions; the way the christmas carol is mixed with the funeral drumroll, etc.)
Really looking forward to 140 more hours of great TV.

I think the best word to describe what Sorkin did for TWW was teleplay. He managed to bring together all the best of an intimate play, to a network audience. And keep the intensity up for 4 solid seasons.

My favorite show of all time, I re-watch once a year, and is in line after I finish my Wire run.

Off the top of my head, some favorite moments not mentioned so far:

- Bartlett debate, referring to Florida accepting national funds: "Can we have it back?", followed by Josh's "Game On"

- Bartlett vs. staff chess game, especially w/Sam & its parallel with the China Sea situation

- Christian Slater breaking the ashtray

- Every campaign flashback when Josh is in a coma

- Santos & Vinick in the coffee shop

- Leo's speech basically waking up Bartlett before he has to give a televised speech

- the Supreme Court justice nomination with the opposites (I guess Glenn Close was mentioned)

- Toby & Sam walking into the CT police station & the cops seeing Toby on the front cover of the paper

- Bartlett verbally abusing the Hollywood producer who slapped around Josh

I could go on forever...

I'm surprised AS hated "I&I" so much. It's not in the same league as most of the eps, but it's still more enjoyable then some that are better. I'll take "I&I" before I take "The Long Goodbye" again.

Isaac and Ishmael >>>>>>>>>>>> The Long Goodbye. The long goodbye has to be the huge favorite to be the worst of the WW eps.

That would be Access. One of my least favorite episodes of any show I've watched in it's entirety. Just f*cking horrible.

It's obviously not close to the same league as most of the greats, but even some of the greats I don't really want to watch again. But I'll watch I&I again.

The worst episode by far, and I mean by far, is the one where Leo is running around in Cuba with one of the national security advisors. It's some ungodly mashup of the West Wing + Alias, just dreadful, and absolutely horrific even by the lowered standards of the post Sorkin West Wing.

Edit: Looked it up, it's Ninety Miles Away

Oh ya I normally skip that one also.

I'm guessing The Long Goodbye was CJ and her Dad? It wasn't so bad. Everybody knows Sorkin didn't write that one, right?

I love the way that Sorkin introduces new characters, even if they're not permanent. Same with his flashback scenes. I think those are probably my favorite moments. Ainsley, Will, Babbish, Tribbey (WTF with only 1 ep), Amy. All of those are just f*cking phenomenal.

Just watched "The Stackhouse Filibuster" tonight. The ending gets me every time, even though I already know it word for word.

Funny, tonight was the first time the answer to, "Mr Vice President, what do you know that I don't know?" became 100% clear to me. The President told Leo the answer to that, over a seedless beefsteak tomato filled with creme de caramel.

BARTLET: Abby and I had a deal...

LEO: One term.

(Also the first time I noticed that Stackhouse, a Senator from Minnesota, had a Viking ship hung on a wall in his office.)

Just found this thread.

Can't believe noone's mentioned Bartlett for America as a fave ep yet. Leo's descriptions of alcoholism in that episode are just incredible:

"I like the little things. The way a glass feels in your hand, a good glass - thick, with a heavy base. I love the sound an ice cube makes when you drop it from just the right height. Too high, and it will chip when you drop it. Chip the ice and it will melt too fast in the Scotch."

"Atty. Jordon Kendall: I don't understand how you could have a drink. I don't understand how after everything you worked for - how, on that day of all days, you could be so stupid.

Leo McGarry: That's because you think it has something to do with smart and stupid. Do you have any idea how many alcoholics are in Mensa? You think it's a lack of willpower? That's like thinking somebody with anorexia nervosa has an overdeveloped sense of vanity... "

Powerful stuff. I love this show, and it's staying power is startling, but great.

I just watched I&I. It is pretty bad. The first half is OK, the second half goes nowhere and does nothing.
