If you listen to what everyone says in this thread, the show is terrible, and it should have lost viewers, not gained them. When people DO hear about behind the scenes drama, they often want to at least see what the show was. If they like it, they stick around. It being easily available on Netflix is still the most logical reason for its major ratings jump.

As for Shawshank and The Green Mile, if it hadn't been for Darabont, neither of those films would ever have been made. If someone else had done them, it's not likely they would have had the status that they do. He did an exceptional job on both the writing and the directing of both of those movies, and they would not be what they are without him.

Part of the reason he hasn't had a prolific career was likely due to the failure of The Majestic. That was a big budget movie, and it didn't do anything. When you have a flop like that, if you're not particularly easy to work with, it hurts you big time. Most of the work he did after that was in TV (Raines and The Shield were a couple of things he directed). The Mist was a low budget movie (18 million), and did very well for what it cost.
Where we disagree is on Frank Darabont's name recognition. As I said earlier, two of his movies have big name recognition but he does not. Darabont was involved in Season 1 with a direct hand in writing and directing. Season 2 he was fired and didn't do either one.

Season 2 ratings > Season 1 ratings. Darabont's name, being fired has had a miniscule effect on the show being watched.

FWIW it's worth I liked 3 out of the 4 movies he directed. Shawshank 10, Green Mile 8, The Mist 7.5.

He was fired during production of episode 7 of season 2. He had a tremendous amount of input on the second season, but either he wasn't doing well, or he didn't like the direction, and he stepped on too many toes, and bye bye it was. We will never fully know what happened.

He doesn't have a writing credit for any of the episodes this season. In Season 1, he wrote episode 1,2, and co-wrote 3,6.

Interesting article about his removal from the show.

Some excerpts:

"Instead of long, sprawling outdoor scenes, the network wanted the second season of The Walking Dead to occur 50% outdoors and 50% indoors (indoors being cheaper to film). Another note asked whether or not the audience
had to always see the zombies – couldn’t they simply hear them sometimes.

It’s been said that Darabont was involved in constant battles with the network to maintain the creative vision that drew so many fans to the series in the first place."

In the comics... Rick was the bad ass one.... He wanted to kill the walkers in the barn and freaked out on Hershel.

In the comics he beat a man so badly he broke and mutilated his own hand from the force of the blows.

In the comics he murders a few people.

That is all.
Asked to list directors I wouldn't have got Lucas, and i'm borderline remembering James Camerons name.

I just spend 5 minutes trying to remember Directors names and came up with:
- Ridley Scott
- Wachowski brothers
- Coen brothers
- Kevin Smith

I had nfi who Darabont was.

Episode 1 of season 2 was written by Ardeth Bey. That is likely him, and he probably took his name off the script due to not being happy with it. Darabont is a world class script doctor, so you don't have to see his name for him to have worked on it. Those are almost never named.

sounds like a job for Ed Norton in the American History X days.

too bad the writers never looked at any of the comics.

Yeah.. Most of the characters where way better in the comics. That is one of the reason that Rick pisses me off so much... seeing him be such a pussy on the show, when he was hard core in the comics.

You mean the writer, Robert Kirkman, the guy who wrote the comic and is a hands on Executive Producer of the TV series?

Sometimes writers aren't happy with their original creation, and want to change what they originally did, once given the chance. This would seem like a perfect opportunity. In his case, he has no excuse. It's not like he signed the rights over and wasn't involved.
