I love how Amy's bf is totally dry and never cracks a joke and then just totally destroys Jonah.

That's an extremely special banter they have. Two guys who in real life have been the butt of tons of jokes going toe to toe. Jonad can't hang with him.

DC, I agree with you about him being Gabe. When he was first introduced, I thought he was absolutely perfect before he said a word. Then, we find out he has incredible comic timing, something that wasn't really on display in The Office. My favorite character addition, by a lot, has been Ben. I'll be really disappointed if he doesn't get an EMMY nom. His comic deadpan timing is unreal, and I think he's close to doing the best work on the show, though it's really hard to compete with how well Julia's doing.

David Pasquesi, the guy who plays Selina's husband is a legendary improviser in Chicago. He's part of TJ & Dave, who do a 45 minute improvised show every week where they'll each play about 3 characters in interweaving stories. Not the most LOL show but all their characters are so three dimensional and their acting so excellent (TJ is top two improviser I've ever seen).

I actually wish I knew how loose the script is on the show, because I find it hard to believe there isn't a significant amount of improvisation with such strong comedic actors.

I almost forgot to mention a shot I loved. It was when Selina was talking about Ben and Kent as a burned out loser and a something robot. They then showed a two shot of Mike and Dan laughing about that, when that's exactly what they are...lol. Such a great shot.

Iannucci has enough control that he'll stop this from going more than 4 seasons (which is how long the British version went). I love the Danny Chung character and am already pumped about next season.

How much U.S input is there in the writing of Veep? Lots of it seems authentically American, they must have a consultant.

Who's #1?

There's a link to the Upright Citizens Brigade as well. Matt Walsh, who plays Mike, was a founding member, and I think other cast members came out of UCB as well.

For my money though JLD steals the show. Veep has established her in my mind as one of the best comic actresses ever.

Glad to see this show get some love after the finale anyway, different league to other comedies out atm.

I bet the show is actually pretty tightly scripted and there's not a whole lot of improvisation.

edit: google knows

C: How much of Veep is improvised?

MW: I think in the second season, at the end of the day, I'd say about 10 percent of the final edit is spontaneous dialogue or whatever. But, in the process of creating the script, we improvise four or five weeks during the year. Before we put the scripts down, we try to work scenes and come up with different ideas and there will be jokes, and the writers are in the room and they sort of take what they think is useful and in the next draft comes a few days later, and we're constantly workshopping. Improv as a process informs the final drafts of the scripts, but on the day of actual shooting, there's really a lot to get shot, so there's not a lot of time to indulge yourself.

She has no chance of being President? I mean she's Veep right now. Is Furlong delusional as well, he seems to be counting on her having a shot in six years.

People who lose primaries typically don't fare that well in the future (Bush 1 being a notable exception). Especially people who have a tendency to put their foot in their mouth at every opportunity presented. Her President is involved in a scandal that could have led to his impeachment. Think of her as Dick Cheney or Joe Biden, though more like Joe Biden. Biden doesn't have a chance in hell at becoming President, even though he'll probably try to run. Cheney never would have run since he knew his chances were infinity below zero of ever being elected President.

Furlong would have zero chance of being anything important. People like him would get smeared to the wall in real life. He's just trying to be relevant again, and Selina is literally his only chance to gain that relevance again. He's more delusional than she is, in my opinion.

So, yeah, I think a big part of the joke is that Selina thinks she can be President. Why wouldn't she, since she ran, and ego is a huge part of running for President (her massive ego is nearly constantly on display in the show, as well)? However, the opening title basically shows you why she doesn't have a legit chance to win. When we see her in action, it makes it painfully obvious why she won't win. Part of the joke with the show is going to be her thinking she's getting a real shot, and it never happening (remember when she was in the Situation Room in season 1, and now the idea that she'll be heading the ticket, despite massive challenges ahead that may not even get her to the election). It's as much of an illusion as the idea that we'll ever see the current President. And that's part of the fun.

What kind of odds will you give me on a joe Biden presidency?

None, because I don't bet on stuff like that.

I just looked at Biden's wikipedia, and it's clear they're loosely basing Selina on Biden. He ran for President in 1988, if you didn't know that, and his campaign unraveled in a plagiarism "scandal" (that was even a theme in the finale). So they probably think of Selina's chances as similar to you, or me think of Biden's, guess we'll have to wait 2 years to see.

I have Ross Bryant & TJ as the top two improvisers in Chicago (not sure which order). TJ has a slight edge in most things, but Ross can perform seriously impressive freestyles (I took a class with him and he really is amazing). Wouldn't shock me to see Ross on SNL one day.

Biden is either the favorite for the 2016 nomination or a pretty close second, depending on what Clinton does. I'd take the field against those two combined, but saying he has no chance at getting the nomination is nuts. He will be able to raise a ton of money right out of the gate.

Nice language switch there. We aren't talking about nomination, we are talking about being elected.

I mean of course if Biden wins the nomination he has a good chance at becoming president. Like the probability he gets the nomination right now is almost certainly much lower than the probability he wins the presidency given he wins the nomination.

That's really not true, but we won't know for sure until 2015 what's even going on (if he gets the nomination he is 50/50...lol). Biden's a pretty old dude, though he seems to be much sharper than a lot of people of that age. Clinton's a frontrunner, for sure, and as a Democrat, I would be very worried about Biden's ability to win. He puts a lot of people off. Selina does the same, just to bring it back on topic.
