I really love this show. It has one of the highest laughs/minute ratio of any show I watch. I thought the last episode was the weakest though. It sucks when a show this good resorts to the schlocky sitcom trope of phone call miscommunication. The show is so successful because it seems fairly realistic (as much as a show like this could be) and juxtaposes that with over the top farce. But the phone plot just stretched credulity too far for me. With that said I still laughed a whole bunch.

Some more general thoughts-

Jonah is definitely the break out character on this show. The last episode was his best when he went to the metal show and also had that amazing bread monologue. He is so great because he gets a lot of laughs with his lines but also is the butt of some of the best jokes too. One that comes to mind is Chlumsky's "You're not even your mom's favorite jonah, jonah."

Anna Chlumsky comeback makes me happier than it should.

Julia Louis Dreyfus is a real talent. Selina is obviously a deeply flawed character who might just be outright contemptible if played by a lesser actress but Dreyfus just has this charm to her that makes Selina more palatable. Her comic timing and line readings are elite. She gets me every single time with "Did the president call?" "No" "No."

I hope they don't resort to another cliche sitcom trope and have this pregnancy be a false positive or have selina miscarry or something. Introducing such a game changing plot twist this early is really ballsy and I am interested to see where they go with it.

Game of Thrones-Veep-Girls has to be the best ever 3 consecutive shows on one night on one network ever right? What are some other candidates?

Actually, the treatment of Jonah is portrayed more similarly to Jerry.

This doesn't seem true to character. Gary is a goofy buffoon sure, but he is also ultra competent at performing his job for Selina. Also, I can't really think of a way he could have screwed up the tests other than reading a negative as a positive but he would have had to do that on several different tests. Someone as detail oriented as Gary would be unlikely to make such a blunder.

Ehh...

You're right in terms of the fact that the rest of the cast ****s on Jonah, but that's the only way it works. I mean the whole punchline with Jerry is that while he might bumble a bit, he hardly earns the disrespect with which he is treated. Jonah earns every ounce of what he gets.

I think there's a much larger campaign backstory behind why they hate him, but we haven't seen much of it, yet. As they expanded his role in episode 5, it's really easy to see why they can't stand him, but he hadn't really done anything overt, through the first 4 to explain why they were constantly making jokes at his expense. I agree that the more we hear him talk, the more crap he deserves. Less is more in regards to his character, in my opinion.

Also the Jerry/Jonah thing doesn't work because as liaison to the VP's office Jonah has some authority over the VP's office.

Get the impression that Julia louis-dreyfus would do better in a sitcom with Michael Richards, Jason Alexander, Jerry Seinfeld and possibly written by Larry David.
Dunno why but i think that show would be a bigger hit.

True, but it's splitting hairs really, because we're comparing characters of shows that aren't really very similar, outside of having truly outstanding ensembles, with the arguably the "weakest" link being the "star". The only other links that make them similar are that they are dealing with government, and a female protagonist who is trying to get ahead, while being thwarted by where she is, at the moment.

We don't need a backstory to understand why they hate Jonah. They hate Jonah because he's an ******* who holds working the president over their heads at all times.

I realize this is just a failed attempt at a joke- but I actually enjoy her performance in this more than as Elaine. I like her with a bit more consistent edge and authority.

You're right that we don't need it, but I think they were being really mean to him even before he started playing the constant White House card (even though he may have done that in his first scene, I can't remember for sure). I think it seems obvious the Veep and Prez were against each other in the primary, and there must have been a lot of bad blood between them. That carries on to their staffs, I think, as there would still be gloating and bitterness, especially if the Veep thinks the Prez isn't doing a good job.

He came off as a major creep in one of the first few episodes, not sure how much more backstory you can reasonably expect.

I had two potentially conflicting thoughts on this.

- I just never care enough about the plot and wait for the jokes

- I was really annoyed that they just did away with the pregnancy like that.

Show has a hard time spot for me, because I'm still in a post GoT/Mad Men headspace and never give it proper attention.

Dick cake was good, the rest was just sort of blah. I think one of the problems this show has is that despite being an ensemble comedy, all of the characters besides Jonah and Gary are just variations on self absorbed Washington political types, it gets sort of monotonous when they all are together.

I'm only at episode 5, but I'm enjoying it overall so far.

Some episodes have dragged a bit at times, but knowing that it's always only at most a matter of minutes to seeing Gary whispering information to Selina (pure hilarity every time) is enough to keep me as a loyal viewer.

I also like the Sue character - it would've been so easy to make her stereotypically sassy, but what they're doing instead not only feels fresher but also is pretty darn hilarious.
