Okay, that WAS Ashley Judd with Ben and Jerry, right? She looked younger and prettier, too.

Really liked the 1st 4. Hesitate to comment much because Lynch always seems a bit over my head, and I don't follow this as much as many.

Hopefully more Beymer and Wise.

Oh boy. This is is extremely embarrassing, but...

Spoiler:
I didn't realize the dark-haired girl with her eyes sewed shut was Ronette Pulaski I feel so stupid now.

On the plus side, my initial thoughts after E3 were that the black lodge / some spirite within it wasn't happy with Cooper's escape, which would seem consistent with both the "mother" banging on Ronette's door and the monster that emerged from the box shortly after Coop and killed those two on the couch.

should i just go watch something like mulholland drive (never seen), and if i like that, proceed with twin peaks?
Seems like there's little sense watching the original series at this point with the goal being to "catch up" to watch the Showtime 18 hour film that you aren't going to like because it's "weird" (50x as "weird" as the original series).

You should watch it, and the current series, and all of Lynch's films, because he's the greatest living director. Not because you're trying to stay current on prestige TV.

So that said, put his films on your list (start with Mulholland since it's on Netflix, Eraserhead after that). If you hate them, get better at film appreciation and try again. Then get to TP eventually.

(But yea, also watch the Pilot.)

I think it's a completely fine plan to watch the Twin Peaks pilot (the 1990 one) and decide if you want to keep going after that. I think 99,9% of people would find it super captivating and want to watch the whole thing immediately after. It's one of the most classic tv shows of all time, it still gets referenced in pop culture endlessly so it's still very "relevant" if you care about that stuff, and there's real value to be able to watch the new Twin Peaks week-to-week because it's insanely fun to speculate on.

I also fully agree that Lynch is the greatest living director, and if you haven't seen his stuff you have a pretty damn big leak. I can't think of a single TV show besides maybe The Wire that would be more relevant to watch than nearly everything Lynch has ever done.

I think Mulholland Drive is the ultimate Lynch movie so if you want to get a feel for what the new Twin Peaks and his overall style is like, I'd maybe start from there. That film is definitely more like the new Twin Peaks than the old Twin Peaks. But whatever you do, don't start from the new Twin Peaks without knowing the entire backstory including its many nuances because it would be impossible to make sense of anything at all.

I lost it when...

Spoiler:
Hawk said "Good night" to deceased actress Catherine Coulson, the Log Lady.

Yeah that was heartbreaking. I'm also sad whenever I see Miguel Ferrer on screen knowing he too is dead now (Albert was/is one of my favorites on TP). Pretty cool how the first 3 eps were all dedicated to the memory of one of their deceased cast members.

I think eps 1-4 have all aired now so everyone's up to date and we can talk without spoilers?

- I lol'ed at the coffee payoff.

- Then I lol'd more at Albert screaming in the car. So glad to have at least one more lol from him (and probably will be more).

- Vegas stuff might be drawn out a little too much, not sure.

- Didn't care for Cera but idk; it wasn't really meant to be good.

- Who would have thought in a million years that Cooper would come out of the Lodge with severe PTSD in a Las Vegas casino?

yea, don't know what the normal spoiler policy is but I assume once it's aired on the east coast, that's it. So if you're watching DVR or on demand or west, you know you have to avoid the threads (and all social media).

On a rewatch, the Coop-as-Dougie scenes left me with a question. Between the old style coin-in coin-out slots and the decorations in Dougie's house (and the lack of cell phones, etc.), is it possible that Coop has come out in 1991, when he went into the black lodge? I could be totally wrong, but is there anything in those scenes (maybe the make of Jade's car or the limo) that would prove this wrong?

Doubt it. Dougie seems to have had an established presence in Vegas for some time, and I assume he would have been made and placed in Vegas for his purpose no earlier than the time Coop went in, if not long after. Don't see a reason to think Dougie and Bob aren't both puking in the same time frame (Twin Pukes!)

When I saw Altheimer's name out of the corner of my eye, my brain read it as a mention of Alzheimer's in the post, which would refer to Coop having it. This is actually a pretty interesting thought, because aging is a huge theme of this revival - it would be even if they didn't want it to be for obvious reasons, but MacLachlan also apparently said so.

I doubt the character officially has it, but portraying a dementia/Alz-like state is certainly there.

when i speak of catching up it's partly to be part of the conversation, and partly to avoid spoilers.

from an outsiders perspective, it is just a little strange to me how much the discussion around this show online revolves around its 'weirdness'. i still have no clue what actually makes it so good. for example, if you asked me to tell you in 1-2 sentences why mad men, the wire, breaking bad etc are great shows, i could very easily do that. with this show it feels like i can't find those sentences without reading the word 'weird' multiple times. it sounds like i'm trolling, but i do really want to read those sentences to decide if this is something i'd be interested in.

Watched the pilot yesterday and just finished season 1. I loved it, can't wait to catch up to the new stuff. Wish Lynch would have directed more episodes, for some reason I thought the entire season was going to be handled by him but I think he only did two

Yeah Lynch's overall involvement declined very much in Season 2, so brace yourself for that. The episodes he did direct were phenomenal though.

It's like the Leftovers tried to become TP but bad luck the real TP came back and stole the thunder

Disagree. The Leftovers finale was close to perfect

However, no reason to knock either show. TP5 was fantastic and I kinda wish i could binge watch the whole season tonight. Who's the bad boy (christopher walken type) at the bang bang bar?
