My worry is the season long narrative structure is too restrictive. It boxes them in and you can't just have random off the wall episodes without any real sort of social satire (which I personally think are South Park at its best, AWESOMEO, etc.)

I think I've said repeatedly that over the last few years South Park has doubled down too much on "issue" episodes.

I'm actually of the opinion the show should be mostly non-issue episodes, and they should do an issue episode when they have a really great idea for one, which is how I feel it used to be.

Go back and look at lists of episodes from older seasons and observe how many are just funny ideas for an episode without it being particular topical or satirical.

It's like now they feel every episode needs social commentary and satire so it's on average not nearly as good since it's mandatory.

I loved it. Miles better than last week. Gerald's trolling keyboard solo was amazing.

last season was fantastic w/ the season-long arc, but these two eps have been pretty weak imo. hopefully this goes somewhere, but I haven't laughed much so far.

feels like it's been like this for the past couple seasons, and it's really hit-or-miss compared to stand-alone eps

This season is so aids, need moar PC, Randy, less Gerald, Cartman being a douche and it just needs to be funny all around fml.

I've liked both episodes so far (not great but ok), and think there could be a huge pay off in the end... However, I kinda liked it better how they did it a couple of seasons ago where each episode was it's own thing, but there was certain callbacks to prior episodes. Like Randy being Lorde, glutten, etc.

The use of music this episode stood out. Usually music is completely irrelevant in sp (aside from an occasional original song or montage), this time there were a few songs that dominated scenes. An interesting change of pace.

Just sort of a nit thing, but use of twitter amongst kids is super low. It's an adult thing. Facebook started off with kids, then adults used it and kids shifted to twitter. Then adults used twitter and kids moved on to new things, instagram, snapchat, etc. So the premise of the kids quitting twitter being a big deal really jumped out as being out of touch (or at least dated by several years - which ruins the premise of trying to be timely and poke fun of current trends).

also the use of breaking or destroying a cell phone as meaning quitting social media was also confusing. throwing a cell phone in a river keeps you offline for like a day or two i guess. But their attack on Cartman, while supposed to be funny, was just sort of confusing. they broke his stuff....do they not realize that social media is not tied to any particular device and he can get online again with a new device?

remember that commercial with the grandma taping photos to the wall of her house and telling people 'i unfriend you'?

the episode just made me want to yell at matt and trey, "thats not how it works. that's not how any of this works!"

Breaking his stuff seems fine, he's still supposed to be a kid.

I liked Gerald being happy scene

the kids arent always kids on south park.

Kids quitting twitter represent all the celebrities throwing tantrums and then quitting social media over getting **** on for x or y reason (trolls, etc.)

cant believe this and the rest of that post is something you actually posted.

Not sure if serious... that's like... at least half of the joke... -_-

i get that part of the joke is that this isn't how it works. I'm saying that the joke isnt funny because that's not how it works.

shirley, they could have come up with a better way to resolve that.

If they had just tied him up and left him in the cabin, that has the same effect of keeping him offline, resolves the storyline of showing that cartman couldnt have been the troll, and maintains the idea of being sad and regretful and maybe possibly sort of killing him (or at least endangering him).

but now, like what, is cartman's mom going to buy him a new phone or isn't she? is that the new storyline now?

Massive drop off from episode 1

Gerald scenes were decent, especially the first one with the keyboards, laughed a bit at that.

All the social media stuff missed the mark for me though, and the Mackey/Scott stuff was awful.

The music in the show has always been frequently used for humor - like they will always play certain musical cues or "serious" sounding songs over events they are making fun of.

Cartman even said in the episode something like "that's like 2 birthdays and a christmas worth of stuff guys" when trying to convince them not to go through with breaking his devices. The implication being that his mom isn't just going to buy him another laptop and iPad the next day. Also, in universe Cartman is the second poorest kid in town and the son of a single mother who works as a crack whore so it makes sense.

Now that I'm done nitpicking the nitpicks, I actually thought this episode was pretty funny. Surprised everyone here disliked it. The montage at the end with the little kindergarten kid getting a note saying "I BRAKE UP" made me lol.

Whatever the song was that played while Gerald was strolling through the streets was well-placed. Great stuff

I thought the Cartman stuff was a spoof of the movie Bully, or the real life events that inspired it (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Bobby_Kent). Fairly obscure though.

BTW is Kenny actually dead now? I don't think he has been in the first two eps.

Kenny was crying in the hallway after being broken up with. He just hasn't been very prominent
