How is there not a thread for this? TV premier was tonight. Thought it was well done and I'll be tuning in the rest of the season probably. Katharine McPhee is ****ing legit.
It was on in the background today and I thought it was impressive. I like how more shows nowadays look like they were made on HBO. That said I doubt I will follow it too closely but I'll see what happens.
Didn't watch it, but McPhee is slammin. My impression from the previews was that it doesn't really seem like something the OOT demographic would go for. Might give it a try if it was good.
I've always thought McPhee had a great voice, but the big surprise is that she can act as well. Not crazy about some of the supporting characters, but I'll tune in every week just for her.
They almost had me hooked, and then they launched into a ****ing musical number walking down the streets of New York. Despite having little interest in musicals I still enjoyed the first 50 minutes or so, even the songs, but a musical show is much less interesting to me than a normal show about a musical.
McPhee is Keira levels of gorgeous though obv, so I will watch again next week.
I greatly enjoyed the show. Definitely more of a finished, high quality product than anything I've seen from network TV for a long time. Lots of characters and storylines throughout. Found Debra Messing appealing, warm, and charming and frankly on an acting level far above everyone else right now. A blank from the mother from 'Grifters' though.
When they mentioned bringing in Kristin Chenowith to audition, it was an enormous musical geek cocktease. Why they'd do this right before McPhee's over-the-top lip synching is beyond me. "Hey, let's mention someone who can act and sing at the same time right before showing someone who, evidently, cannot." Oh, and they have a competing actress for the lead who also gets the lip synch treatment, despite actually being from Broadway? Odd.
The choreography and filming of the dance sequences is absolutely the nuts! I'll be impressed if they can keep that up throughout the series. Would be more impressive if the songs were better, ldo.
In a word; hooked. This show has a lot of potential and I don't think you have to like musicals to enjoy it at all. I think most of the actors need to pick it up a bit, but it seems like the writing is right there. Or they could just let Messing keep stealing the show while McPhee looks gorgeous.

This is a ridiculous complaint. There's no way a filmed television show is going to have the actors sing live. That's just not how it works at all. The sound mix would be completely different than the non-singing parts.
As for the show itself...it was decent...I, too, was a little underwhelmed by Angelica Huston - which is odd, because she's always fantastic. Looks like she's had some bad work done.
The only thing I didn't like is actress who plays Ivy. She's very odd-looking.
Also, isn't it obvious they're going to milk the "who will they choose" angel and then cast them both - as "Norma Jean" and "Marilyn?"
Interesting, I hadn't considered the overall sound changes. Still, I found it pretty jarring during the song--I mean I actually laughed out loud. The synching part could be better.
Not that this is really going to bother me all that much, but can Katherine McPhee really be a credible Marilyn? Like, the two opposite female prototypes of the day were Jackies and Marilyns, right? McPhee looks like a Jackie, and her "happy birthday Mr. President" thing was nice and all but it/she doesn't ooze sex the way I think that type of character would have to.
wrt lipsynching - next you're gonna tell me they dubbed over the part where they're walking down the streets of New York blasting out a tune! Not a big deal imo.

Nice subtle Mad Men reference.
I think she has the necessary sex appeal, although definitely not Marilyn worthy. She's way better than Ivy, that's for sure.
