It's funny, I saw that opening scene with the Taurus and thought 'wait, this show is period but were there Tauruses or pagers in 1986?' I guess there were Tauruses.

I saw some disparaging of Treme in this thread and while Treme starts off damned awkward - plus it unfortunately has 2 David Simon surrogates - its final 3 seasons are quite excellent stuff.

Anyway, Show Me A Hero was phenomenal - Simon's preachiness was kept to a minimum, the story was well-told, the acting was great, and the writing was solid. I think the 6 episode format worked quite well for the story as well. Of course no one's watching it. I think David Simon is still going to continue to do projects with HBO because they like the prestige he brings even if all his stuff is a giant money loser.

The real hero in the story is that somehow democracy seemed to have worked in this case, even if it was a judge ordering a town to comply with his orders, and even if the former mayor's life was chewed up in the process.

Interesting. I think it showed the tragedy of democracy, but also the utility of it. The project only came to fruition when the angry majority was dragged into the process. People wrongly blocked people's rights, but that same majority, when they failed, we're shown that the problem wasn't the blacks but the their own lack of cooperation in those failed communities.

I just got around to watching this. Everything has pretty much been said itt, but I want to reiterate how refreshing it was to watch a show with top notch writing and acting. Despite the dry subject matter I was still invested in the characters, and eager to watch the next episode. I too was moved by the montage.

Oscar Isaac is a boss. ( Just got around to inside Llewyn Davis a week or so ago), pretty much everything that guy does is good.

All in all, I was very pleased with the show.
