He acts nonchalant because the joke requires a certain delivery.
He thought he had a pass to make that joke and use the Nbomb because of his record as a proponent of black causes and promotion of black guests. He was wrong.

The way Maher has been treated after uttering the magic word is disgusting and appalling. Completely ignore context and intent, completely ignore what he's done for progressive causes including black people his entire life and focus on those few seconds that took him to come up with a joke. Nothing else matters. That's his legacy now. A racist and a bigot for the rest of his life based on that judgment call.

I can see now how someone could say "Uh **** it I'm voting for Trump" after this.

meh, agree with the start of your post, and this will no doubt be on his wiki page forever, but ultimately it will be essentially forgotten about.

**** anyone who gets offended because of a word. Any word. Words are nothing by themselves. They are a medium through which people exchange ideas. It's OK to be offended by an idea. But to be offended by the medium is to be offended by the air through which the sound travelled.

The N word has been used by many white people to express hateful, violent, horrific ideas about black people. In that context, I can completely understand how it feels like a knife. But that exact same word, when used in a different context to express completely different ideas, should not feel like a knife. I knew exactly what point Maher was making when he made the joke, and it had nothing to do with hating black people or wanting to see violence done to them. Choosing to be triggered by a word is intellectual infancy.

Hello Yeti,

You are correct. This is why HBO should ban Maher for a few weeks, to prevent people from forgetting. Maher usually goes on break during July and August right? I feel like HBO should ban Bill until the fall. That seems fair and just for everybody.

+1,000.

As much as I think Maher is getting way too much flack over this it was sweet watching him squirm while Ice Cube was going off on him.

So sayeth Oberbrunner, the supreme arbiter of all things.

LOL that a ban of a few weeks will prevent people from forgetting. I've already forgotten, and Maher's absence from HBO isn't going to prevent that.

thought this episode was super super flat. bill seemed a little subdued and the audience was the quietest i've ever heard.

with that said, overtime is worth watching.

Was disappointed in the conversation with Breitbart guy on the main show, mainly because Bill didn't do his research. They talked at one point about how if the play company had put on the Caesar act with Obama as Caesar that the left would have had a meltdown and gone nuts.

Turns out, that same company DID do Julius Caesar with Obama as Caesar in 2012, and the simple fact that he didn't even know that completely disproves the "left would have had a meltdown" bull****.

I get that Maher tries to be as impartial as possible in order to get people onto his show, but when he goes along with their manufactured white hot bull****, it drives me nuts.

If your ancestors were being called the n word while being raped, hanged, castrated, butchered, forced to fight until death then you wouldnt view it as just a "word". Wow you posted absolute hot garbage and its sickening but this is the world we live in, tons of people think like you. Its just a word get over it, slavery happened hundreds of years ago, get over it. This mentality is why we still have problems today, minimizing the situation and making light of it. What he said was wrong, he is not a house N, house N's were treated like **** and he will never have had to experience that based on his skin tone. So for him to use that situation as a joke is absolutely disgusting. It was tasteless and classless how could he have thought it was going to be ok? You say choosing to be triggered by a word is intellectual infancy, that is just straight up wrong in this situation because the N word is more than just a word, it is a title placed on people who feel they are superior to said people. At this point it is in action word because of all the atrocities tied with it.

The overtime talk was interesting, primarily for the pure personification of whataboutism. Malcolm says "you should apologize for the fake article you put out that led to my family receiving death threats" and Brietbart guy goes on a rant listing everything the left has ever done wrong... as if that has anything to do with Malcolm's family receiving threats.

Its so ****ing transparent and dishonest.

I thought it was one of the best shows of the year. Great interview, two smart conservatives, non-cringe actor, and Russia expert. No weak links imo

I don't think so and the joke actually makes sense if "house negro" was used. That's the actual term popularized by Malcolm X in his Message To The Grass Roots speech.

Your heart's in the right place but your analysis of the etymology is off. The so-called n-word is a strange beast. It didn't even start to become The Word To End All Words until post-emancipation.

I'm looking forward to Franken's return next week. I wonder if Bill will give him **** about cancelling his last scheduled appearance or just pretend it didn't happen.

Parsons, and even though he was pleasant about it I don't think he liked it much when Bill made the joke about people with terminal illnesses not really being brave. He kind of shut up after that.
