I'm putting this show at like 80% to become my new favorite show just based on the trailer. Should be awesome. Like I might be more excited for the pilot of this show than I am for the season finale of Boardwalk and Boardwalk's easily my favorite show right now and has been on a very impressive run all season really.
Yeah premier tonight. Though its just episode 1 then its on hiatus till january then it officially starts. More like a teaser to get the juices flowing. I know **** all about television but I find the lack of promotion a little bizarre to tell the truth. I think it has to do with no tv critics having seen it so there is not much to talk about. Idk
Seemed you needed to know a bit about horses to appreciate this. Not very easy to follow otherwise. Tough to see it drawing in many people who aren't really into horses or gambling off this first episode.
A bit disappointed with the 1st episode. Might have to re-watch though since anything following Boardwalk tonight would have disappointed. Just seemed like a lot of dramatic music for otherwise boring scenes of guys hanging out at the track.
I thought the premiere was pretty mediocre, which is shocking to me given this is HBO + Milch.
Lots of washed up actors and a pretty weak script.
I'm somewhat interested to see how the degens light their winnings on fire, and the poker angle might be interesting, but I felt like I was watching Tilt (the ESPN series) instead of a big budget HBO show.
It was even more underwhelming after watching the last two episodes of Boardwalk Empire, which were masterpieces.
Most of these shows tend to rapid fire the first 20 minutes of the premiere with "insider" dialogue to show how hip they are to what they're portraying. I've been following horse racing since I was a little kid and even I had trouble keeping up.
That said, seemed to get better in the final 20 minutes when they weren't trying to introduce us to every single character in the series in 30 minutes.
Don't think this was a good move to premiere this 6 weeks before episode 2. Most people probably gave up in the first 30 minutes and aren't coming back (my gf is one of them).
I agree that this show will have a small niche (Horse handicappers/gamblers) as the main viewer base. I thought the pilot was nothing special, although I will be a fan of the show regardless and tune in everyweek.
I dunno how good of a marketing plan this was to air the Pilot now and then have a 7 week hiatus until episode 2 will air.
Was never really a Milch fan before Deadwood so I don't know how his other shows were, but I thought the dialogue in that show was what made it phenomenal and what the hell do I know, I just thought that might be how they talked at the time. Then with John from Cincinnati I thought it was out of place. A lot of it also felt out of place here too.
It's not just me that had a really tough time following that was it? Could barely decipher what they were even talking about sometimes
Spoiler:
why did none of them look excited at all, first when they realize they can't lose the pick 6, then when they actually win the jackpot? Besides the one guy shadowboxing I don't remember the other guys even breaking a smile
Not what i expected. Veryhard to hear the first ten-15 minutes. Wife hated it and she loves boardwalk and game of thrones. Needed more Hoffman and Farina. The 4 degens were interesting but didnt understand their weird behavior after winning. Also, i was a bit let down in the dialogue. My favorite parts of deadwood was the dialogue. Overall am a bit let down though i think it will pick up once i get more familiar with the world of horse racing. Also have a feeling thepoker scenes will be cringe-inducing.
