I've been living under a rock and had not watched this show until 3 days ago. I got hooked and ran a marathon viewing session all the way up to current. Preaching to the converted here, but this show is amazeballs.

I definitely agree with the comments about Anne. She is a great straight man. Once Mark Brendanawicz left she took over that role.

I think Rob Lowe is a genius and this character is so amazingly off the wall. I think the character mostly works because he is around the straighter characters more often. If you teamed him up with Tom or Andy he probably would be less funny.

The whole cast is just amazing. The writing is super. The pacing is fast for all the setting up segments but knows when to slow down for the emotional beats etc.

I have loved seeing some of the characters with real minor roles slowly build into real supporting characters. Donna was kinda a generic recurring background character at the start now has her own sub plots and that Jean-Ralphio cracks me up.

Characters I look forward to each episode the most:

Ron
Tom
April
Chris
Jean-Ralphio

Also, and probably most importantly, there is something about Aubrey Plaza that gives me the same feeling of that time we had to climb the ropes in gym class.

Can't believe people disliked the Ann plot. It had the biggest laughs in the episode for me, when Ron and April kept questioning Ann about the horrible hospital story and when Ron explained why he called Ann by the wrong name.

I didn't like that they used the birther plot initially, but after watching the episode, I think if you had no episode of the birther movement you would have liked the whole episode. I think Leslie's last speech about the importance of home was heartfelt and touching.

Apparently the book about Pawnee is actually very good, anyone itt give it a test run yet?

i dont get why adam scott being a terrific actor would be a reason why ben isnt the 2nd best character

i mean if you had an awful actor playing him you probably wouldnt think as highly of him, just like if someone was playing ron you wouldnt think as much of his character

i dont think he was purely asking who the best written character is, he was simply asking if it was possible ben is the 2nd best character- the actor's ability should play into that imo

that being said i think ben is 4th- ron/april/andy are a pretty clear top 3 to me

Adam Scott is better at the John Krasinski reaction than John Krasinski is, and Jim has always been my favorite character on the Office (never understood how so many people didn't share that opinion.)

the Ron and April questioning I found super funny. lots of giggles.

I'm outside the US so I only have a periphery understanding of the "birther" thing in the US (some Americans think Obama was not born in the US and thus not good enough to be president or something). I liked the episode, I thought it was more or less a comment on the absurdity of nationalism and parochialism in general. More importantly, it was just really funny.

Most eps of Parks and Rec there is a serious satirical element or two if you look hard enough for it, but really its just a great light comedy. They are not preachy; they are just mining local government for the comedy gold contained within.

Leslie is way underrated ITT. I think people take for granted her importance to the show, her brilliantly defined character traits, and Poehler's insanely good blend of physical comedy and intelligent nuance. I think it's because she's the central character of the show and the person everyone in the department must behave around, viewers take her for granted and look towards the fringes instead.

the main character is almost never the best character. she's great, but you're never gonna see anyone putting her on top of a list.

I agree with this completely. When I heard Amy Poehler was going to be on the show, I didn't have any interest in seeing it. When I edited and mixed some commentaries for the DVD of season 1, I fell in love with the show, and I didn't even get to watch them in order, or all of them. Once we delivered, I went on hulu and watched all of the ones that were available (the whole first season).

She is playing so against the type I had been accustomed to her playing, that she absolutely blows me away on the show. Her performance is definitely one of the best on the show, and it's hard to believe she can play this part as well as she does, as convincingly as she does, and as funny as she does. This cast is so stacked with great comedic actors, so, outside of Rob Lowe, it's just a straight up amazing cast, from top to bottom. In his better episodes, Lowe is fine, but he's the only character that consistently annoys me, these days.

Donna and Jerry are both genius, and it would suck if they weren't on the show. The end of the last episode was a classic Jerry scene, even though I missed the payoff, after Leslie responded to him, because we watched the shows out of order from Thursday.

A main character needs to ground the show. So they never provide the comedic highers of the peripheral characters. As much as people say they would watch an entire show about E720 after 1/2 a season they would probably hate it.

I don't think I could do much more than one episode about E720. It's pretty obvious where their arc is going, unless Ben becomes a business partner and figures out a way for them to make money or something.

Not to politard, but full explanation: If you aren't born in the US, you are actually ineligible to become U.S. President. However, the birther movement mostly stems from people not liking the president being black and having a funny name.

It's not so much a "reason" as the other way around-- the Ben character isn't necessarily the best but Adam Scott's performance elevates him to being much more likeable / enjoyable than he would be in lesser hands.

I think they'd run out of material, but it is a decent idea for a spinoff. It can't be worse than Whitney or Free Agents...

I love Andy and April on their own, but as a pair they're the nuts, well second nuts behind RFS. Jerry and Donna would be like 7/8 for me and they're great.

When they give Lowe good material he's hilarious (his wedding dance was one of the funniest moments of the show). His character is pretty terrible though, and he's always a big part of the worst storylines.

there's no point, unless NBC goes insane, cancels Parks and Rec and there's a huge outcry to retain Aziz

this doesnt really dispute my point- if ron was played by a less talented actor it would be the same way

I put the book on my amazon wishlist (IE xmas list for my parents). If I read it, it will be the first non-poker book I've read since I graduated college.
