Despite the fact that I emphatically believe that the phrase "jumped the shark" has jumped the shark...this show has jumped the shark. Or maybe it jumped the shark years ago and I am too much of a fanboi to have noticed before now. But it has definitely jumped the shark. To wit:

Spoiler:
1. The head shaving at the beginning of the episode. WTF? It was obviously scripted as they later revealed, but come on. Why even put it in there and waste our time if you're going to just tell us two minutes later that the shavees were in on the act?

2. A black guy named "Tavon?" Really? Are Skittles and iced tea going on Gordon's menu?

3. A fat guy named "Clemenza? Really? Were Vito and Tessio too busy whacking people to participate this year?

4. The former Israeli drill sergeant (Guy) is shaping up to be my favorite, though I cannot for the life of me figure out how being an Israeli drill sergeant qualifies one to be a head chef.

5. Dana appears to be easiest on the eyes of the female bunch, so I expect her to be out within the next three episodes.

6. By contrast, Kimmie is almost painful to look at. There was a shot of her early on in the show as the crew scrambled to make their "signature dishes." Blech. Her navel could easily hold a quart of bean dip. Ergo, I expect her to go far this year.

7. Early favorites for Least Self Aware Cast Member go to Tiffany on the women's side ("I know I'm hot and everything"...um, no you aren't) and Royce ("I am the best cook here"...um, you can't even make pasta dude).

My early favorite, if he doesn't suffer a massive heart attack before season's end, is actually Clemenza. He seems to know his way around a kitchen for the most part. But he is not in great shape. In keeping with the show's tradition of sending a fat person to the hospital early in the season, he will probably be out of action soon enough, paving the way for Chris or Justin to take the crown. Just MHO obv.

And despite the fact that we've landed safely on the other side of the shark tank, hair and leather jacket intact (AAAAAAYYYYYYYYYHHHHHH!), I will watch until season's end of course (though NEVER again without DVR'ing first...the teasers are just too obvious, and stupid).

I kind of stopped watching after realizing Top Chef was so much better. Lets face the facts none of these contestants will ever really be the head chef at a Gordon Ramsey restaurant.

The lack of any skills and a hideous cast to boot. But I may end up watching

The editing on this show is giving me a seizure. You got this lunatic Ramsay constantly screaming at everyone, camera cuts every 3 seconds, emphatic music, intense narration, etc.

Chill the **** out FOX, sometimes less is more.

I usually stop watching mid season because the best part of the show, to me is Ramsay screaming at awful chefs.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first few seasons, but then the show just fizzled out for me. I think it's from a combination of finding out that basically only Rock received the prize that was touted and the show's shift around season 4 or 5 to clearly casting people who were just there to stir the pot (pun intended).

It's still on for 2 reasons - Ramsey needs the dough (pun intended again) and the ratings versus production costs makes it a profitable show to air.

Wait wat? I did not know this! I vaguely remember the season 1 winner changing it up some...IIRC the prize for winning season 1 was your own restaurant, and there at the end Gordon tells the winner he can either take the prize or instead he could move to London and go to work for Gordon, which he did. I did not know that the prizes were bs?

I mean, I assumed that there might be some angle shooting going on wrt to these "jobs" but I didn't know it was outright bs...

it has happened that they gave the winner just the sum of the contract and didn't want to hire them effectively. Check wikipedia

it's crazy that the bar has been set so high in previous seasons for "most unattractive" and "worst personality" and yet kimmie is looking to take gold in both events for the series

the preview that showed her holding a cig in one hand and doing the bitch finger wag with the other almost made me puke

i have my HK bingo card, all i need is "fatty collapses" (smooth jimmy's lock of the week), "dumbass injures self then is overly praised for working through it", and "give me your jacket -dramatic pause- because here is your new black jacket for the combined single team"

Its not total bs, wikipedia says only one winner didn't get the job. They said her visa wouldn't allow her to work in the UK. She doesn't know if thats true or not. Everybody else got a job in a restaurant (although not always as an exec chef) and the money, most didn't last very long though.

I would be shocked if more than one winner still worked for Gordon. Most of the ones that did were probally working a salad station.

Also a poor cast choice so many scary people. Why do they all seem to smoke every show?

If you google "Hell's Kitchen where are they now" or something to that effect you see several sources - although, who knows for sure if they're reliable - indicating that most winners get a lesser position than what viewers were led to believe. Here's one such "source":

Where does the truth lie? Who knows. I'm sure the contract that each contestant signs to be on the show makes what they received fully legal and proper, even if it is not the "as advertised" position, but it still kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth (yet another pun intended) as a viewer having this kind of stuff in the back of my mind.

It seems like this year the producers just got a bunch of random people who are more stereotypical characters with weird personalities rather than chefs. I understand that it is TV, but if you are going to go this route, why not pick a few good looking women.

If you are just going for ratings, good looking women are the way to go. Even on a show like Top Chef where they pick REAL chefs, they always have a few good looking or cute girls. What happened this year with this show?

The women's team seems set on trying to out-gangsta each other. Kimmie's "hood" routine in the second episode made me burst out laughing.

I'm hoping they're doing something "special" for the tenth season, and come black jacket time, Ramsay reveals that the contestants are uniformly too crappy to continue, they all get sent home, and the best of the rest from the previous seasons come back for a battle royale.

Meh, there are a couple of cute-ish girls on this season. Dana comes to mind. There's one other one who isn't completely awful looking whose name escapes me. The problem is that Kimmie is so dogtastic that she brings the average way, way down.

They've said or at least implied this season that other previous cast members (non winners) have gone on to bigger things. Royce is supposedly working IRL with the Season 1 runner up.

I would almost be willing to lay 3-1 odds that none of these idiots becomes executive chef at Gordon's restaurant in Las Vegas, though. Unless it's just a position in name only or something. On Kitchen Nightmares, I have seen Gordon recommend the immediate firing/replacement of chefs who were much more competent than the best this season has to offer. The Masterchef "amateurs" blow these guys out of the water. If I'm looking to staff a restaurant from a reality TV show cast (one not on Food Network anyway) that would be where I would start, not HK.
