Once Upon a Time Once Upon a Time

This has gotten really strong buzz on the forum and the ratings for the series premiere were really strong so it definitely deserves its own thread.

Starring Jennifer Morrison (Cameron from House) and Robert Carlyle (Rush from SGU) its easily the trippiest show concept this fall.

The story is:
Spoiler:
that a bunch of fairy tale stories - Snow White, Pinnochio, Sleeping Beauty, Rumplestiltskin and others are real, and the Evil Queen cast a spell that transported them from their world into ours where they are now all humans with no memories of their former lives where they live in Storybrooke in Maine stuck in time.

(minor spoilers from the premiere)

108 - A tip of the hat to LOST.

I liked the pilot but I'm doubtful about the the rest of the season based on the season preview at the end of the episode. It looks as though future episodes will be a combination of what we saw in this episode (interesting) and flashbacks to the origins of old fairy tales (maybe not so interesting). I don't know how they are going to handle the flashbacks though. Ideally they will be tied in to what is happening in the modern day story line.

Also Jennifer Morrison could afford to skip a few days at the gym. She's packed on a lot of muscle post House and is getting a little thick for my liking. When she was wearing that red dress, holy hell, she's packing Linda Hamilton's T2 arms and shoulders. She's still hot of course but she's definitely riding that fine line. I guess she wanted to look a little tougher to play this bounty hunter.

I honestly have zero idea how they are going to do this show. I think doing it half in our world half in the storybook tales could be cool though.

Despite loving Fables (graphic novel, not really related but a little similar) and digging the OUAT premiere i have shocking little knowledge of these fairy tale stories (i skipped that part of childhood). So i picked up on Grumpy being the other jail cell from his demeaner and the high ho song he hummed briefly and jailbait slut was Red Riding Hood (cos of the red head scarf and living with grandma ldo) but im curious how many of the little references like that i will get on stories i know less about as the show continues.

I watched it and enjoyed it but I dunno if i'll follow weekly, probably just nap it out and if the reviews are still good after 8-10 episodes i will catch up. Definitely looks promising but I have very little faith in people watching these types of dramas in big numbers anymore ..... no lawyers no doctors no blowing stuff up no neatly wrapped bow at the end of each episode = prolly cancelled

is this going to be marketed to families/kids or the Lost demo?

I'd guess the sheriff is the woodsman from Snow White.

One thing that bugs me is the timeline and rules of the town. So everyone is still the same age as they were in the enchanted land, but time has clearly passed if Henry is 10. And if they don't age, how does no one from outside town notice this?

And does Prince Charming look like Daniel Bryan?

Prince charming has been in an coma for 28 years? what in the ****? Rumplestilkins(?) is the town owner. Yea, this is a potential gold mine of a story.

I *think* the way the time line suppose to work is that everyone from fairytale time instantly merge into the modern timeline with lives prebuilt for them.

28 years has passed for Emma, the evil queen, and the queens bad guys because they were not affected by the spell.

Remember, at the end the clock started to move (Emma's 28th birthday). So I guess that means, that the fairytale characters are now back in control of their actions but with no memory.

I think it has something to do with being inside Storybrooke that time is stuck. So they probably havent aged for the last 28 years and they dont realise they havent aged as that was the curse placed upon them, but because Cameron and her son were both outside Storybrooke and werent cursed they arent effected by it. So while everyone else has been stuck for the last 10 years, the kid has aged because he wasnt cursed by the queen.

TV by the Numbers just posted the 15 minute interval ratings for the premiere. It gained in every 15 minute period, even though football and baseball started at the bottom of the hour. Very impressive.

I'm sure some of this will be addressed in future episodes. My guess is that people from the outside can't get to Storybrooke Maine, Emma and her Son being exceptions. As for the complication this would cause in a real life scenario; I'm willing to suspend some disbelief, this is after all a fairy tale. At this point (only one episode in) it seems like some serious nitpicking.

Lets look at what the show is doing right. The casting of Snow White, The Evil Queen, Rumpelstiltskin, Emma, and most importantly Henry, was spot on. I really can't say enough about Jared Gilmore (the kid that plays Henry), television rarely gets it right with child actors. Snow White is beautiful, The Evil Queen is deplorable, Robert Carlyle is exactly what a human Rumpelstilskin would look like, and I'm glad to see Jennifer Morrison in the lead.

The special effects were also pretty good for a television show.

* I really liked the pilot which surprised me because I am not a fan of Lost and Fairy-Tales don't get me overly excited.

We have the same theory. At the end of the day I really don't care about the real life scenario of this and am not seriously nitpicking, I just noticed something odd and posted. I'm not up in arms about it, just hope it's addressed well in the future

AV club review (think it was posted earlier ITT?) said the kid isn't great and gets super annoying in the 3rd ep, iirc.
