30 minutes in. All the relationship stuff is bad, really, really bad. And in regards to the post above by this point in the pilot Mortimer has been established as a strong brassy woman ... until she sees Will and turns into mush and gets a look on her face like she's a lost puppy dog.

Those Erin Andrews references are so bad and stupid.

Really shocked people loved the pilot so much it came off as superpreachy to me. The patriotic parts (you could tell these parts from the others because of the hilarious music) were simply cringeworthy and the supposedly smart James guy ignoring the new guy so much out of spite seemed stupid to me. But really I guess I just disliked the whole premise that delivering the news in a "good" or "unbiased" way is such an exciting or even really possible thing using television as a medium. This is really Old Man yells at cloud but this subject is just not that interesting and if they start making value judgements on things politically its going to be annoying to pretty much every subset of viewer at some point.

Considering society is ran by baby boomers its interesting that he chooses to blame the youth in his rant. At least way back when society was good right. Pure and unadulterated self indulgence.

The wire was awesome because it showed you the system and how it was. Shades of gray everywhere. The answers are nit obvious to anyone you came up with your own solutions. No talking head is capable of telling any objective truth

Edit- just read that NPR review. Basically perfect. Banter was humorous but the message was self righteous

Loved the opening scene and the newscast. I took the rest (or most) as character development that had to get out of the way.

This show definitely looks promising.

I liked this a whole hell of a lot more than I thought I would. Absolutely in normal rotation now. Really great imo.

Doesn't it kind of undercut the message that the media isn't really doing its job to portray reporters who have the perfect knowledge of hindsight by which to make all their decisions?

We'll see. I have a feeling that they will show what happens when reporters act on imperfect information pretty quickly. Having great intentions with imperfect information will probably be a running theme.

Yeah, I forgot about how bad the "you're a member of the worst. generation. ever." line made me cringe - I'm pretty sure it's not 20yo college students that put our country on the current track that it's on, but that's just my take!

Isnt it far too early to make the assumption that is going to happen?

Im also pretty sure you didnt understand the premier if you think the message is that reporters arent making correct decisions due to imperfect conclusions. They arent trying to make decisions half the time and when they are drawing the correct conclusions they are not following through due to ulterior motives including ratings and public opinion polling. The point of the episode clearly wasnt "they got it right and no one else did", its that they actually went and looked for the information about the minerals agency who are giving ineffective oversight and that the host was willing to hold talking heads and spokespeople to account.

Are you suggesting we have a Sorkin-JJ Abrams crossover show on our hands?

I thought his "worst generation ever" line was being sarcastic, kinda repeating what most old geezers say

<rattles off statistics>

"...more than the next 26 countries combined, 25 of whom are allies. Now none of this is the fault of a 20 year old college student, but you nonetheless are without a doubt a member of the WORST. GENERATION. EVER. so when you ask what makes us the greatest country in the world, I don't know what the **** you're talking about. Yosemite?"

I could see it going either way, I guess, but if it's sarcasm it's not that obvious.

Zero chance that it was sarcastic. And yes, that line was a huge facepalm moment.

Right, I think he's making the point that society is set up f'd up and yet those that have made it that way or at least have kept the status quo are so fast to call "us" the worst.

Love the yosemite line, though. Grand Canyon might have been better, but it doesn't roll off the tongue as well.

Ha, yes. And I think you mean sambert guillaumerson.

It was everything I expect/hope for in a Sorkin creation. Loved it. Yes, the idealism is so sugary-sweet that it's almost sickening. But it tastes so yummy.

Just watched it, and yeah, this was a pretty huge miss. They just happen to have a smart Indian kid to instantly explain the engineering implications of an explosion on a deep water rig followed up by two perfectly placed sources to confirm it, give me a break. You get some amount of dramatic license, but that was just way past the point of being able to take seriously.
